Friend Almost Died From Flu

Actually a friend of my mother, 65 year old guy, was perfectly healthy, got a flu shot

1 week later gets the flu.

6 weeks later he is just getting over it, almost died, doctor said he is a walking miracle. :Q

I knew nothing about this until today....wondered why I had not seen him around lately....

Flu shot anyone?
Think I'll pass.

Are you sure he got the flu from the flu shot? There are 3 active strains this year i believe... the flu shot only covers 2 of them. It could have been the 3rd he got.

Besides, it's his age too. Depending on how old you are (up to 50 or so), the flu isn't that big of a deal. Of course there are exceptions.

well the guy is over that age by 15 years.
Either way, I wouldn't be so quick to blame the flu shot.

It takes 2-3 weeks for the flu shot to be fully effective. One week might not have been enough time to give him any protection.

no I am not sure, but it seems mighty suspicious.....after all they inject you with the virus to make you immune.

what is it with americans and flu shots?? do everyone HAVE to get flu shots??

I've never taken a flu shot for the past 5 years and I am fine..

(but on the side note I live in sunny socal!! 😀)

It's a DEAD virus. It only provokes your immune system to produce the antibodies, you cannot get the flu from a flu shot.

For the last time, you don't get the flu from a flu shot. You can get flu-like symptoms from a flu shot (from your body creating antibodies and fighting the dead influenza strain). It is just coincedence that they happend so close together.

Hah, that's what "they" want you to believe.........bwahahahahahaaaaaa

I got a flu shot back in October.

Most everyone here at work either has or has had the flu. I haven't gotten it yet. Maybe I'm just lucky. On the other hand maybe it's the beginning of the end...Anyone ever see or read 'The Stand'???

Flu shot doesn't cause the flu. It only contains proteins triggering antibody response. The nasal flu vaccine, is a different story, that thing actually contains the live virus.

They SAY that you cannot get the flu from the shot, but if that's the case, how come there is so much anecdotal evidence against this?

In addition to the fact that you CANNOT get the flu from the flu shot, if he got the flu six days after he got the shot, the flu had been in him for at least a week before the shot. There's a week to two week incubation period during which the flu is in your body before you show symptoms.
