in my dorm we all play desert combat, its a sweet game :). my friend across the hall has a POS 700mhz p3 with a 16 meg video, so naturally he wanted a new computer so he could play with us. so i offered let me make a cheap athlon system with a 9600pro for about 500 bucks. he told me that his dad knows a lot about computers and ordered him a new one. he gets it in after about a week and what do you know? a dell dimension 2400. intel EXTREME!!! graphics, and no AGP slot. so much for desert combat:(

Father knows best, right?

Be sure to mention to him that Dell offers a no-hassle 30 day return. :)

To add, I know how you feel right now. My next door neighbors were thinking about getting a new computer, and i told them that I was very experienced in building computers, and could help them out on building a very nice system for under $600.

"Oh, great. Well, I think we're just going to go with getting a Dell."

yeah.....you don't know what you missed out on.

you should be happy ...

i'd rather tell non-close friends to get a Dell because i don't want them bugging me to come over and fix their mistakes. now, they wont bother you, but Dell's outsourced tech.

i don't offer to help people build computers anymore at all. if they take your advice and they screw something up, you are at fault, if they don't take your advice and they screw something up, you are at fault. they are never fully appreciative of your efforts and if you charge them then you are tech support for the rest of your life, hell even if you don't charge them you are tech support forever.

OMG, SID your so right it hurts. You make me warm all over. That is exactly why I dont volunteer my services anymore and go through all the explaining and convincing and all that. You dont get the appreciation for the effort. Unless a really close friend that knows enough to know they are getting a bargain it is not worth the time and effort at all.

Hey, Nick you ever think his dad really does know a lot about computers and purposefully purchased one without AGP and onboard graphics so his son wouldnt get caught up playing games when he should be studying... I just thought of this and it would be a legit answer and pretty smart on daddy's part.

Newegg is carrying some Radeon 9200SE and FX5200 cards in PCI format. Not exactly fantastic, but they'll surely run circles around his Dell's onboard video and his old rig too.

Clean it up!!! No place for derogatory words like that here in a computer forum....Substitute in morons!!!

NIck I always figured you for a college kid!!! ;) Where do you go???

Get him to send that back and get him outfitted correctly....Who needs tech support when you have a dorm full of gamers and pc users.....Maybe that will rub off on him and he can tech his own problems..That is how most of us have learned. Trial by error...

Yeah I offered to a friend to build a new comp so he can get a good enough computer to play those new 3d games, but his dad decided to get a new dell with an EXTREME graphics solution... so he still plays original ut and starcraft on it...

i go to north central college in naperville IL. exactly, he doesnt need tech support. in 50 square feet he has 20 people who know more about computers than the dolts on the dell tech support. i think he will learn his lesson when he try's to play desert combat with us.

thats the problem with 99% of PC buyers. they only look at GHZ. "intel celeron with 2.8 GHZ!!!!11one WOW! 2.8!! sure must beat this athlon 2500 with only 1.83 Ghz..."

i wont have to tell him anything. his display on his monitor should tell him all he wants to know

another thing that bothers me. another guy down the hall just got a brand new alienware from his parents(waste of cash IMO) and i go to check it out, and he is running games in 800*600, and when i asked if i could change the resolution for him he told me he liked it how it was.

invite him to your room , and show off some games on your rig. if that doesn't change his mind, nothing will.

i had a friend that bought a pc 2.4A, with 512mb ram, g4mx440. i rented him a copy of deus ex. and when i played it on my system (tbird 750, 512sd ram, ti4200), he said it was noticibiliy smooth on my pc. he knows my pc is a lot older than his, except my video card. this was like 1-2 years ago.

i had a hard time teaching him different between amd and intel megahertz. heh

Man am I glad I don't play games anymore :)
I personally offer to help ppl who ask for it. I have been standing in Compusa or BB and heard one of their sales ppl try to get someone to spend 1k more than they need to, and I just wait for the tech to walk away to check the price on something, and I tell them exactly what the sales person was right and wrong about.
Anyone who asks me for computer help, specifically building/buying a new computer, unless they are computer savvy or live very close to me that I could go by on the weekend, I just refer them to a pre-built brand name computer. It gives them tech support and warranty, 2 things that I can't offer them when they need it.

Nick... show him this thread...

and Sid, since dell is so "helpful"with their support, nick is probably gonna have to help him anyway.

Dell might know more then you. :p They have all sorts of useful stuff that they would otherwise never let us know about built into those things.

Sucks to be him. Oh well....you tried atleast.

I've played counter-strike at 800*600 for a couple years now. It's just what I'm comfortable with, so that isn't such a big deal cuz he could just be comfortable with it. There are some very good cs players that still use 640 even(i think it's horribly disgusting...but that's me). Now in every other game you gotta crank up the res. :D
