Fried system? P4C800 deluxe "system failed CPU test"

Hello experts,

I could do with some opinions re. the following...

My Asus P4C800 deluxe with P4 2.8Ghz has been working flawlessly for 1.5 year or so untill last night when in the middle of normal operations the system froze...Screen black, HD led remained on.

Upon rebooting the ASUS voice post message says 'System failed CPU test" repeatedly...Nothing else happens. Today, thinking my CPU died I went out to get a new one (P4 3Ghz this time)..Just installed it, however the problem remains the same...

Seems to me that the next logical step is to get a new MB, however the $$$ are beginning to stack up so before I do that I was wondering if anyone may have encountered this problem and resolved it without changing the MB?

In other words, could it be anything else than a fried Motherboard???

Thanks for all your opinions/experiences!!!

Best regards,

Johan

POST is power on self test. If it failed that than it can be a board or CPU problem
because of the errors i would suspect the system bord to be the problem not the CPU. Did it overheat? do you overclock your MoBo or CPU?

Any more info on problem will help.

Hi...thanks for your reply...

I did overclock my CPU from 2.8 to 3Ghz. Not too spectacular I would think, been running that way for a long time..I don't see any obvious indication of overheating, but haven't removed the motherboard yet.

As the problem didn't go away with swapping the CPU I also think it's the motherboard. It's only some 1.5 years old, bit early to fail in my opinion...One thing I did notice when I opened the PC (hadn't done that for awhile) was a lot of dust, perhaps that caused a problem somewhere?

Expensive weekend this way....Oh well

Hi there....

On Monday went out and bought a new MB...As the p4c800-deluxe was out of stock I got myself a p4p800-E deluxe...Installed it Monday evening and everything works like a charm again....
So looks like the MB gave up after all, I'm gonne try and see if ASUS wants to repair. Should still be under warranty. Ofcourse this means I have to go find the receipt, which 'll be a challange :)

Thanks for the help!
