Hey folks,

My monitor no longer detects a signal form the computer. It was working fine and just happened all of a sudden. I opened up the machine and the cpu fan is no longer running. I pulled all the cards out (both agp/pci) and booted the thing up, wouldn't ya know...cpu fan starts running again. As soon as I put in either a PCI card or the agp vid card the cpu fan goes again. Sort of a dillema becase I cant see what the computer is doing without the vid card installed. Is my motherboard fried? Anyone have any experience with something like this.

The computer is a custom built machine put together like four years ago. So it is an older board, Abit LX6 to be exact.

Man, this sucks...if anyone could offer any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys,

Kevin

Sounds like it could be an extremely weak/dead PSU. Without any PCI cards installed the PSU may be putting out just enough juice to spin the CPU fan. When you plug in a peripheral card it sucks up what little voltage is being produced and kills the fan.

I don't know if the mobo or CPU are fried, but swap another PSU into the rig to see what happens.

Hope this helps.

Happy, thanks for the reply. Get this, after having sat untouched for a day and a half I went to give it another try. Sure enough, the thing booted up fine (w/ all the cards in). I suspect it is a power problem but I think the power supply is ok. I live in an old apartment (house) with a bunch of other guys. I've noticed on my surge protector that the light flickers. I think maybe I'm just not getting enough juice. Is this possible? Does a computer take up that much power?

I had that board and the same thing happened to me, it just fried one day.
You may want to try replacing the battery in there, 4 years is a long time for a battery to run without going dead, it's either that or the Power Supply.
