My mobo got done in by mains surge it was a jetway 663aspro. A friend is giving me an Asus A7A266e and athlon 1600 and 512mb memory. Can I do a straight swap of the boards setting up bios of course but keeping addresses programs bookmarks etc, on hdd . It has win 98se and has a lot of stuff I really wouldn`t like to lose. I have a spare 2 gb hdd if this is relevant . Iam fairly new to pc`s but not to electronics .thanks

You will probably need to reformat your hard drive cuz windows usually doesn't like mass motherboard/processor/ram switches. Back up all the important stuff onto your other drive, then format it.

With windows 98 you should be ok swapping the mobos etc.

You will have to leave it to install the hardware drivers for about 10 mins, maybe less, and will probably need the Win98 CD too.

Its only NT based platforms that are picky when it comes to mobo swaps, well, in my experience at least ;)

I swap motherboard numberous time without have to format, reinstall windoze. Only do it if your windows is corrupted and it no longer function correctly which is like once a year, 2 or even 3.
