I have a fried IBM 40gb hd that went belly upa few weeks ago

what can i do with it (short of throwing it)

i have tried all methods of rescuing it, and it went while i was formatting it, so theres no data left

Drill a hole into the platters so that no one can recover anything off them, ever.
I just beat the crap out of the hd's with a hammer. I don't have the tools to take a hd apart, so those that have died in the past get the hammer. It's good stress relief especially if you're ticked off at technology at any point. 🙂

What about sending it to IBM and getting a replacement. That is what I did...

i don't have anything to do with it like a reciept or box or anything

it's also 2 years old, is this out of warrenty?

All you have to have is the serial number off the HD, which is supposed to be on the label. I don't know about IBM but WD has a 3 year warranty on their SE drives.

Just run the DFT from ibm and it repaired a load of errors on the disk, although it now shows up in the bios it is miss reporting the size by 6 GB.
Also it does not show up in windows explorer but it does in device manager, does anyone know how to fix this?
