Fried Fan Controller

My fan controller recently just fried and i was wondering why something like this would happen? Was it just a fault part or was it a human error? Here is a picture of the controller. Kinda blurry but you can see the burn mark. Linkage.
The Fan controller was a CompUSA brand one that i picked up for 10 bucks about 7 months ago.
 
If you used 92 - 120mm fans you could have exceeded the amps that its wiring was rated for. The manual, packaging or website should list the max allowed.
