Ok, So a buffy of mine's PC blew out on him.

He says the machine was running, Froze, and shut down. Upon rebooting spans would fin but no TV signal.

Brought it home and it was a disgusting mess. Everything caked w/dust. Pulled it all apart blew out the GPU and CPU cleaned everything down put it back together.

Noticed they are mixing two types of RAM but it was running fine with mixed RAM for a long but noted it anyway.

I plug it in and just like he said lights come on, fans kick in, but no signal.

First things first try onboard video, nothing
try a known working GPU, Nothing
Pull RAM use only 2 similar sticks, nothing
RAM 1 stick, Nothing
try my personal known working RAM, Nothing

Im getting no post beeps at all and the debug thing is reading FF

At this point Im pretty sure its not the PSU so process of elimination leaves CPU no?

This is the MB in there

What do you guys think?

Do we know if there is a connection or device on the motherboard to even play a beep?

The reason I ask is that a 'no beep' situation indicates a problem with the board.

Most BIOS manufacturers have a beep code for a no-CPU situation.

If nothing else, a good test would be to pull the CPU and see if there is a beep.

You might also want to try a known working power supply.

Did you friend notice a burning smell when this occurred?

I did not see anything for a speaker. I thought it might be built in but cant find it. Tested the PSU all the lines test at the right voltages. So either its MB or CPU then.

doesnt matter either way, If they have to replace either one they might as well upgrade and replace them both.

I would go with Ketchup79's first take: mobo

Question: when you opened the box and saw how filled with merda it was and took things apart and cleaned them, did you unseat the chip? If so, did U replace the thermal paste?

I assume you reseated the CMOS batt, yes?

You are a very good friend, by the way.

And this typo was adorable: Upon rebooting spans would fin:D

Probably mobo.

I would like to point out that a PSU that is outputting correct voltages at no load is not a guarantee that it is working up to specs.

lmao @ the typo, CPU is seated fine. never messed w/it just blew out the heat sink with air. I dont have a spare psu and I do not want to rip my PC down any further to test, Ive already pulled my GPU and RAM once. I am trying to get them to upgrade their system anyway so this might be the push they need. I will check the cmos battery didnt even think about it. Wonder if I should try resetting the board pull battery wait a few hours etc?

I was wondering about the state of the thermal paste on the chip. You've done a lot, and hope they do upgrade, but might be worth it to pull the heatsink and eyeball the paste. it might be dried out or messed up and useless. A clean heatsink won't do much good if it's not making decent contact with the chip, after all.

Resetting the CMOS batt, fast, simple, and only need to wait for a few mins, so might be worth a try.

But, I'm afraid it's the board.

Yep, that was award winning adorable typo.:D

That had to be intentional. You just trying to fe bunny, right? Anyway, I doubt its the cpu. Test the power supply, dont assume. If that tests ok then it is most likely the motherboard, one of the chips on the motherboard probably blew.

I never joke about bad grammar and dont call me shirley.

It is an old Phenom 2 machine that was really starting to show its age

Plus it was a bootleg version of windows that was chopped to hell, So getting them to build a new machine allows me to fix some of that and get them updated.

They had some OCZ gold RAM in there (2*8) mixed with ripjaw (2*8) and an old GPU.

It was a cobble piece of a machine. The RAM is excellent but no idea why they were talked into buying such excessive RAM for a rig like that especially when they bottle neck it with a shitty GPU. They didnt even use it for gaming (I'm hoping I can rectify that).

Anyway thanks guys for helping but since its 1 of 3 issues and 2 of them mean a complete swap anyway im going to just go for broke on this one.

from what i understand its almost never the chip. A guy that repairs computers said he's only seen bad cpus a couple times in years but he sees bad mobos everyday.

Yep! In my almost 15 years of repair I have seen maybe 5-6 bad CPUs and usually when they fail they still POST but do weird things like run extra hot or the memory controllers go wonky. Motherboard, however.....all the time.
