hi guys,

i was tweaking with my new computer bios and i changed a setting which i probably shouldn't have... considering my computer doesn't post anymore. No beeps and nothing on the screen. The only thing that happens is the fans on my case startup. (FYI, I changed something called CPU Performce from Optimal to Aggressive in the Advanced Chipset Features in the BIOS)

I tried clearing the CMOS jumper to no avail. I tried resetting the FSB jumper - nothing. Do yall think it's the CPU or motherboard?

My system specs:

Athlon XP
2 Corsair DDR RAM (512MB total)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard (nforce 2 MCP-T)
Creative VGA
Creative sound card
2 Western digital HDD
Sony CD-RW
Iomega Zip 100
NEC floppy

I think it is still the bios. Did you take out the battery and let it sit awhile before you put it back? It sounds like the bios didn't get reset and it is still try to use the bad settings.

I tried multiple times to reset the BIOS. I _did_ let the battery sit out over night. The Asus tech even told me to reverse the battery... I even tried that. Still nothing. Do you have any other suggestions on trying to reset the BIOS?

Did your system run at all when you changed the setting, or did it immediately fail on the first boot?

Could just be power supply.

after i initially changed the setting, the system did not boot. however the chassis fans all run... so i didn't think it would be the power supply... though at the same time i'm not getting the lights on the front of the chassis. this is a difficult problem 🙁

Well, it is safe to assume your BIOS has been reset. Leaving the battery out over night should have taken care of that.

Sounds like it's time to start pulling stuff. Try booting with nothing but CPU, RAM, and video plugged in. Then try another PS. Try no RAM and see if you get error beeps. Try no video and see if you get error beeps.

i pulled everything but the CPU. When I pulled the memory - no error beeps. when i pulled the vga card - no beeps. I guess i can pull the CPU as well.

It's certainly possible to still have fans spinning with a bad PSU, but it sounds like mobo to me. If you can, try another PS and try your CPU in another system.
