Freshwater Fishing & St Louis Residents Chime In Please!

I've been fishing saltwater in the Northeast coast my entire life. Striped Bass, Bluefish, Weakfish, Fluke, Scup, Blackfish, Ling, Sea Bass, all that fun, edible stuff.

I'm taking a few summer classes at my Washington University and really want to go freshwater fishing. So I had two questions to pose to ATOT:

1) What's a good fishing combo? I really don't want cheap $20 kiddy combos. I want to set a $80-$120 budget on a good rod/reel combo. Any recommendations?

2) Where are good fishing hotspots near the St. Louis area? I am willing to drive a max of 2 hours to go to a great spot. There are many lakes, but I don't want to waste a weekend fishing up little fish and weeds.

Thanks a lot!

If you want some fun fishing....nothing really big though head down south to the ONSR (about 3hrs away).....
or try out some trout fishing at bennett spring or montauk....

As far as gear goes it all depends on what you wanna do...

I've never been but I hear there is some nice fishing on the meramac......

I live in southern MO so I usually stick to this area around the ONSR...

Check out Cabelas for combos, they usually run some pretty good deals this time of year.

I am a fishing snob though, and I only use G.Loomis spinner and fly rods. They probably a ways out of your budget though.
