It's highly desirable to have firewall protection before letting the new system see a network connection. If you're installing WindowsXP and your copy has Service Pack 2 already on the CD, then that's good because SP2 enables the firewall by default (and fixes lots of dangerous vulnerabilities too). Using a router between your computer(s) and your modem is also a great idea.

More ideas on this page and the following pages for you. Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0 just came out, and may help identify some lesser-known Microsoft-related security issues, like weak/blank passwords that leave doors open for malware to exploit your Admin powers behind your back.

Get a firewall, tidy up the case, take pics, burn in with Prime95, then benchmark! :)

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot, last step is to enjoy using the comp!

I usually run memtest first, then Prime95. Then move on to Sissoft Sandra for general info (Performance Wizard), then 3D Mark 05 & Aquamark to make sure the vid's working well.

Then a litle hard core FPS gaming :)

Black Viper's Service configs are peachy. Still don't understand why people love to rail against them. As for tweaktown's tweakguide, it's fantastic.

If you have something constructive to add, out with it, if not quit moaning and write your own guide.

AutoStreamer + AutoPatcher.

Should get you upto date with all the patches and updates before going online.
