my friend had xp installed from a previous owner but no cd. He had probably junk that wasn't needed so I said I would give him my cd since I am using 7.

I started it all up, did the full reformat, then got to a point where I was going to start installing then had to cancel out and put in my cd rom since his may have read errors.

After installing it, I started it up again and got...

"Ntkrnlmp.exe Could Not Be Loaded. The Error Code Is 7"

Using microsoft support pages didn't help at all. The first one talked about incorrect bios/cmos settings, to which it said set to default, which it was already. It also said bad RAM which I switched around the sticks to see if they became unseated. The computer was JUST running on XP before I reformatted.

The other page talks about "This issue may occur if your computer's BIOS has issues when ACPI is enabled".

I went through the bios and turned things on/off/auto one at a time for acpi and nothing changed.

Other links I looked at:

http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/resolving-ntkrnlmpexe-could-not-be-loaded-error-code-7/

I did the remove one ram, insert the other, vice versa...still nothing.

I can't even get it to get to the part where it starts up, and offers a format option like it already went through.

Still nothing.

This ms support page

#3 ...pressing F7 does nothing.

I have no idea how to get into the recovery console as the reply says when there is no option to get into it on start up.

You need to start the PC w/ the windows CD in it and proceed as if you were going to reinstall windows. When the CD finishes loading, I believe you press F8 to agree to the terms, but then instead of installing you then have the option of going to the recovery console. Hope that helps.

If it's a name-brand PC, it may have a System Recovery Partition on its hard drive that would re-install the OS as it came from the factory.

That won't solve any hardware issues, though. If the memory or hard disk or CDROM drive have problems then those'll need to be discovered and repaired.

I already did the initial startup to install. The problem is after installing my cd rom to minimize read errors, it started doing that error message.
I am just using my 98 cd then installing xp from within it as a non upgrade right now and see how that works.
It was a computer that his brother's employer was getting rid of that they gave to his brother who then gave it to him. Without a valid cd he was never able to update it via Windows Update so this should help him there.

well that didn't / isn't working out well.
First time I tried an advanced clean install, left it running for hours, and he came back to tell me that it seems to go off / restart then came right back to W98 desktop without any xp installed.

I then tried to do an upgrade install from within 98 and left it going overnight. It is still stuck on the 50% mark of copying files.

It has enough. He has 512 ram, 30 gb hd. It should have been a basic install.
Pop the cd in, boot from it, format, install...but not...
Obviously you didn't read my post, as I already linked that page that is of no help.

Can you try running memtest ?

I had similar errors once w\ a dell optiplex gx620 that didn't like the corsair 6400 ram I put in it.

The computer was just running xp on it already.
The only thing I was doing was formatting and reinstalling a fresh xp.

I was able to get w98 on it but the xp install just stops with that error if I tried to do the boot from xp cd option, or if I did the inside w98 install option (both upgrade and advanced clean), it would hang at 50% on copying files section.

You said it's an xp upgrade edition, but does the old trick work on it? As in install xp but don't activate it and then install it a 2nd time so that it sees an OS on it and allows the upgrade?

Like I said I can't get it installed at all as it just hangs at 50% into copying files, no matter which of the two install methods you have for inside W98, or it gives that error 7 when doing off cd boot.

Having the activate option implies it has been installed.
