Where did this NVIDIA driver come from?

I messed around with a Win7 install for less than a day before doing a clean Win8 install (booted from CD) on my new build just now.

  • Asrock Z87E-ITX
  • EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760

All I installed was the Asrock disc. After many reboots (without user prompts), I noticed the "NVIDIA 3D-vision-whatever" shortcut on my desktop. I always opt-out (by selecting "custom") when installing an NVIDIA driver because I don't have a 3D display. As far as I can tell, the Asrock disc does not contain any NVIDIA driver.

I checked Windows Update history and it only lists only a single update:
Windows Update History said:
Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2895219)

Any idea how this driver got installed?!?

I think you are only viewing Windows updates, and that it doesn't show all updates in that view.

Windows 8.1 automatically auto-installs both Microsoft and third party drivers including NVIDIA driver packages. You have to change your Windows Update settings yourself if you don't want it to occur again. That said you can still remove the parts of the NVIDIA driver package you don't want installed via Add/Remove programs.

Check your installed programs. Default NVidia drivers in windows loads the 3D, PhysX and sound if I remember correctly.
