My ex told me she went to a restaurant in Greece and they had outdoor seating in front of a beach. A boy would come up to the table, introduce himself, and run out into the water and catch the fish they would eat.

hah awesome...
I've seen places in the Caribbean like this. Some local fisherman go out and catch stuff, bring it back and they grill it on the beach and charge people for a plate of food. Awesome stuff and usually really cheap. Like $5 for rock lobster tail and fresh snapper.

I go to charleston SC a lot. Last time down there I had fresh tuna that was caught that morning. Seared, mostly raw. Was incredibly good. I also get fresh shrimp all the time. I dont each much shrimp because store bought freshwater shrimp/prawns suck. They are usually frozen then thawed and very weak flavor. The fresh SALTWATER shrimp taste so good, its like the difference between cafeteria fish sticks and fresh fried fish.

you want crabs...come to MD

must... resist... crabs... joke...

Anyways, to what someone said before. Most fish should never smell or taste fishy. It should smell like the ocean, like seaweed, like a salty breeze. Also make sure that the fishmonger keeps a clean workstation. Too may times I go into a place that has fresh live fish being cleaned/filleted on a pretty dirty table. Also, fish blood usually stinks too, make sure the fishmonger cleans and drains it out.

Fish... shouldn't taste... fishy?
What exactly should they taste like? I mean, if there's one flavor I would expect fish to have, it would be "fishy" since they're bloody FISH.

Mmmmm... sushi.

I've had some tasty MD blue crabs twice so far this year. Although I just read that the blue crab population in the bay is only 10% of what it was 10 years ago. Ouch.

They shouldn't have that typical malodorous smell or taste that we call "fishy", no.

Went to a oyster bar like this in Mexico. You bought a drink, they'd send a guy to dive for some oysters. Came back w/ a dozen.

that's why you should not dine at red lobster.

oh god... red lobster. I went to one a few weeks ago because we were in a hurry and our only choices were chili's, red lobster, hullihans. All the same IMO. Thought we could get half decent fish at RL. What I got was a $30 plate of tiny shrimp completely immersed in butter, frozen fried shrimp, a 2 ounce lobster tail which was over cooked and these scallops... i swear to god I didnt know it was scallops they were so funky, old, and burnt. Looked like small erasers on a skewer. It was the most appalling $30 plate I have ever seen in my life BY FAR. I should have taken a picture and sent it to red lobster's corporate chefs. I have ordered some really bad seafood in my day, I have ordered seafood in crappy diners that probably hadn't served fish in months... This at the red lobster took the cake and then some.

What's equally sad is red lobster charges prices that could net you a very decent/good meal somewhere else. $20-30/plate grants you access 80-90% of the good restaurants. The chedda biscuits are good, but that's about it....

I am used to being in coastal areas though. Must be tough getting good seafood landlocked areas. Not that its difficult to transport, probably the cost vs demand.

I lived in Kansas for a year and missed this so much....fresh seafood is one of my favorite things. In the last week Ive had:

Friday - fresh trout, deep-fried

Tuesday - fresh shrimp (i headed 50lbs worth, then had scampi for dinner)

wednesday - fresh blue crab, steamed and served with buttah and old-bay

fresh seafood is one of the few things about where i live that is worth a damn.

now to find some scallops...

Whaddya mean Kansas has no fresh seafood. We have great largemouth bass, outstanding crappie and succulent catfish. We have great crawdads as well..

ok, we dont have shit,.. but the catfish is good.

i forgot about this thread 😱

also, no sea = no seafood. you have fish, sure, not seafood. shrimp are about the only thing that dont bother me when frozen.

my mother is going to maine in september 🙁 i dont know of anywhere here to get fresh-from-the-sea lobster. wal-mart keeps a tank with some in it...but im not that hard-up for lobster.
