Fresh re-install of Win98 on C:\... Is data on D: & E: partitions safe?

I'm moving my Maxtor HD to a new PC. I'm told a fresh installation of Win98 is needed due to different CPU. I don't want to lose the data on the other partitions.

When installing win98, does the installation program destroy other partitions in the process? Or am I just confusing win98 with Linux Server?

your other partitions should be no problem.. actually, even your data on the C is okay, unless you want to format it yourself.
(data, not apps.. )

98 Shouldn't touch any data, unless you format first. I don't remember 98 ever having to format during installation. So it's all good. 🙂

Is that to mean if I just install fresh over the old installation I don't need to reformat and I don't need to backup all my "favorites", etc? Yet, it will now install for my Athlon over and replacing the installion for my P133?

I've moved win98 boot drives from one machine to another (back when I was using 98) with no problems. As long as you first remove all hardware from device manager, and change video adapter to Standard VGA, you'll likely be OK. After the move, win98 will reinstall the hardware. Also, it's important that the new MB BIOS pick up the HD configuration the same as the old - but if both are set at Auto detect, that shouldn't be a problem.
