Just finished a brand new install of WinXP. Installed SP2, Defender, Anti-Virus and all updates. What is the best way to back this up so I can restore it quickly. I used the XP backup and backed the C: partition up to DVD. Is there a better way?

Thanks.

The best way to keep data safety is to backup at least system partition to an external hard drive or CD\DVD.

You may use integrated Windows Backup feature however there are a lot of other solutions with more abilities and features.
I prefer True Image which has Rescue CD and allows me to restore Windows if it crashes. I need only to boot from this CD and run restore process from my hard disk copy archive.

create an image and then back it up to an external hdd. then worst comes to worst, 1 hour later you are at the exact same condition in which you are now.

Since I used Norton Systemworks Premiere, I have not only NAV, but Ghost. I usually clone my boot drive and set it aside. My programs are installed with boot too. Another thing is that I save all my large files to separate hdds. Should my main drive needs changing/reformat or for whatever reason needs replacing. I have a standby clone. The procedure continues. It takes 15 minutes to swap and back to normal.

HDDs are inexpensive at the moment and data protection is inexpensive now. For those who can't afford to recover data later, do the smart thing and start transfering their important files to backups/slaves or other means of storage. We keep hearing the horror stories of lost files. When will we ever learn......

Create a bootable disk from a Windows setup installation of Acronis and use that to create a backup on a linux box? :)

The partition types are supported. I always keep a bootdisk of Acronis in my work binder.

It's SO handy to have; especially when you wipe someone's harddisk and they're not sure if they have everything backed up. Just keep the image for like 2 months in case they call back with "Hey, I had a file here and now it's gone!"...."Well, yeah, I kinda erased your HDD to reinstall your Windows, but I'm smart and made a backup. Here's your file, m'am!"

:p

It happens!
