Fresh install of WinXP Pro on Dell 4100 laptop goes fine. 2nd reboot results in 5-10min delay for network to 'kick in'

This is exactly the steps that I have taken:

1) Started with a clean hard drive

2) Installed WinXP Pro

3) Install went fine, 2 files came up, AMDK6.sys not found and Msdace.dl_ not found, otherwise everything else is okay.

4) Load up into Winxp, greeted with green grass and blue sky.

5) I DO NOT install or configure or alter or change anything. After succesfully booting into WinXP for hte first time, I tell it to reboot.

6) SYstem reboots, and loads me right back into winXP again, green grass blue sky etc, I can sometimes click on the start button, but usaully when i move the mouse down to the task tray it goes into "busy hourglass icon mode", however i can manipulate all the icons on the dekstop open MS word, write a spreadsheet etc... all that works.

After 5-10mins everything "else" loads, the lil chirpy winXP load up song plays and then i can see the network icon in the bottom right task tray. Now i can surf the net etc...

Why is there this HUGE Delay?

I have tried multiple things such as

a) reinstalling with the latest 3com device drivers for the 3c920 network adapter on this laptop
b) trying DHCP and non DHCP settings for my DSL network connection
c) disabling netbios, and all other netowrking settings other than the most neccessary ie: disabled QoS packet sheduler, client for MS netowrks, file and print sharing

Also, another small but annoying thing, is when i load up XP for hte first time, somtimes i will go to hte sound settings and tell it to show the volume icon in the task tray, but after the reboot it will never show up again, even if i go back to sound settings and renable it to show the volume icon. ARGH

Anyone have any friggen clue as to what is going on?? Why does EVERYTHING work on first boot, and then i go and reboot, or hard reset or whatever and it all goes to crap?

christ all mighty this has been the most frustrating thing i have ever done. Im about ready to rip this Designed for XP sticker on this laptop and burn it!!!

Ive reinstalled Winxp several times now, i thought it was somthing related to when i installed Norton Systemworks, but it wasnt at all related it all happens on the 2nd reboot

That's not a fine install.

All I can tell you is I just got an Inspiron 4100 myself and XP installation was pefect. Sound, NIC, video, etc all worked without a hitch.

Try running bootvis, it tells you what takes so long during boot.

Something similar has been getting on my nerves too. I can't get the Task Manager cpu utilization icon to stay down there, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and I have no idea why.

right now i reinstalled to win2k and everything is working great. I got norton ghost on here, so im t hinking of ghosting this image, and then trying to possibly "upgrade" from win2k to winxp and see if that does anything.

we shall see
🙂

as for those 2 missing files, i dont konw if its due to somthing on my m achine or the cd is scratched a lil bit, but it is odd that those 2 files wont install.
