Fresh Install of Windows XP Problem

Hello, I recently reformatted my PC and did a fresh install of Windows XP Media Centre Edition and a number of problems have come up. One of the main problems is that I can't install any program due to this error:

Also certain programs such as Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player don't seem to be installed and the XP theme along with the Royals theme seem to be missing, also when I go to the Properties of My Computer it can't seem to get the information from my PC it only shows that I have 2GB of RAM and other things such as the Help and Support programs seem to also be missing. I was wondering what the cause of these problems could be.

As far as I can tell everything I did to re format my PC and install the OS was done correctly.

MUTTS,

I don't have any idea what that png file is... maybe a rootkit or trojan horse on your drive? If so that would explain your problems. Had you been doing anti-virus scans before? And had a firewall?

In any case, sorry to hear your problem. I believe I'd have another go at it...

You might want to do a zero fill of the drive to clean it off thoroughly before you re-format it. Try this: http://www.downloadjunction.co...ware/117710/index.html

Then do the XP install. Just be sure to watch the prompts as you go along - it's possible you may have selected a wrong prompt and that could have caused some of the problem.

Good luck on the next try, Noel

Hi Mutts,

Lets go back to the beginning . . .

Why did you do a format/clean install?
Were there any errors during the installation?
Tell us a little about your hardware.

The most common problem with an unsuccessful clean install is bad installation media or an unresolved hardware issue.

Did you follow the correct installation procedure for XP MCE? That is, boot off of CD1, swap in CD2 when prompted, then reinsert CD1 again when prompted?
