It’s all bout knowin what them two levers do…if you aren’t sure what lever A does, lever B. :p
Ain't that the truth. Some people just get it. I put my son on a mine excavator some years back and he was proficient right away.

It got to 95 at home today, it was 75 when we left out of there with the load on at 1:30.
Another one of the many reasons we are moving there, I really don't care for the heat and it is consistently 10~15 degrees cooler with the marine influence.

Yesterday was momentous. I started the pension June 1 and had not seen a deposit yet so I called the office. The person I spoke to knew who I was and said the first deposit would happen today!
Two months retro plus interest, and the August 1 deposit all in one. CHA-CHING!
Later I check my email, and our house permit has finally been approved after nearly a year of dicking around.
BADA-BING!

I spent yesterday morning hand clearing so I could get the stringline up and see the property line for the first time. Survey was completed last friday.

3a020f8106cac273_4170-w240-h180-b0-p0--.jpg

Then I grubbed off some of the brush, and spent some time with the laser figuring out what will work.
I started borrowing from the lower level, some excellent river bottom sandy rocky stuff, and rejected the big boulders right back into the hole as I went.
Today I hit that project hard and borrowed about 200 tons and completed the fill portion.

I did not get out the laser today.

Everything in front of me is now a cut in some heavy clay soils that retain water well.

Tomorrow:

I will shape the slopes in the next picture and trim them up for a consistent 11 foot top, ~12' from that stringline.

Hammer the surface and slopes with that hoe pack above.

Cut those good growing soils, and use it to cover and fair out the slope so I can seed it immediately and catch this fall growing season.

This is roughly 10% grade. The dump truck backed right up there and the lower portion got a half inch of rain overnight. Good stuff!

This is an old farm road that bisects my route at approximately subgrade. 4~5' cut ahead on the other side of it.

That little bit of brush on the left?

It has a raptor nest, likely red tail hawk in it only 8' off the ground. I was careful to preserve it, cutting limbs of a bush I was removing. I hope they come back, I will set a web cam in the nearby snag or the big cedar.

I got to the top and then reworked it on the way back down. The dirt up there was really dry. I brought it with me and shaped up the slope with it.

I cut the road down and moved the profile farther into the hill, which reduced the height of it at the worst of it.

I have to trench some pipe into the top corner of the slope and will blow all that up, so no point in dolling it up too much yet.

I need to widen it and correct alignment, but I like the way it looks from the top.

I'll build wall on the left by that little fir tree.

What is your final top layer/coat going to be? Compacted crushed stone?

Are you going to be able to get your foundation in before winter?
Slab on grade pour is scheduled for 16 to 20 September. It might push into the next week
ICFs will come shortly after that.
What is your final top layer/coat going to be? Compacted crushed stone?
The final layer is for occupancy that will be the concrete ribbons. The base course will be 3 in minus. I'm getting an 18,000 lb dozer up there on the 12th and hauling rock in.
One of my operator friends will sit on the dozer Saturday while I bring 150 tons of rock down.
I have a unique opportunity there. I found one of the contractors in rock has a pit or quarry only 6 minutes from the house.
It is not open to the public and has a locked gate, but I took an MSHA online safety course and I have a transponder for the dump truck. If I notify them that I want to haul on Saturday, they will activate my transponder so I can haul Rock from 8:00 to 3:00. It is truly the bomb!

a 500' roll of 1" poly pipe is heavy.
Two? Get the machine.
PXL_20240831_191155390.jpg

The starting point is ~40' from the corner of the house. I'll set a larger box there when we are done.
I'll have a 1.5" poly pipe as a sleeve coming up in the mechanical room wall, and pull some 1" pex through that. Also a few conduits for local data and fiber.

All the way to the property line.

first of two 1" poly lines, next to the 1.25" future FIOS and my 3/4" dark fiber pathway. We took those heavy bastiges to the top of the job to roll down.
I made the data pulls around 140' long max to sweeps and handholds. I am not attempting a 500' pull.

Backfilled and the road opened back up.

PXL_20240902_021753063.jpg

This tree was too close to the house and in the driveway path. It was a 3 top mess, I limbed it and then took them off 1 at a time and got the stump. It was a 3' butt.

Gonered. The two trees past the excavator are on our lot, and still screen us for privacy.

We took that out to make a spot for this yew tree hiding in the fir tree, dead center in the house. I will try to save it today, with my luck it will turn brown faster than an old banana.

After I limbed the fir and took out two trunks, the Yew is visible. It was in stealth mode.
PXL_20240902_155835906.jpg

It was rather symbiotically welded to the fir roots so I don't have high hopes, but we got it moved and watered in. Fingers crossed. We tucked it into that grouping where I took the first tree out.

Took off an inch or so of the sod, then saved all the topsoil.

The clay became significantly more durable and I had to switch buckets. We got a slot dug in the middle all the way across, and also down the south side to the corner.
PXL_20240906_200642896.jpg
That let me visualize grade from the seat so I sent my helper home out of the heat and got to bulking.
I tossed and tossed and high stacked what I had. The rest will get high stacked in the remaining space.

Yesterday, using the CR700 magnetic mount target,
PXL_20240907_154213699.jpg
I roughed it in about 3" high
PXL_20240907_214456844.jpg
Bob and I got 4 corner stakes in and pulled square and that was a day.
I got up early today and put in batter boards, and then slicked it off with the smooth bucket at +0/-2" and the plumber laid it out.
PXL_20240908_184517733.jpg

We got it plumbed and also laid out most of the footing digs.

Daisy the neighbor dog helped. She was content to sit there all day, but I let her get back to her main hobby, hunting mice. She watched a coyote hunting mice one day and when it left, she went out and got started.
