Frequent lock ups/shut downs

This problem just started happening yesterday, my computer will either lock up or it'll just turn off by itself. I scanned for viruses but there were none. I tried to format my HD, reinstalled my stuff, still the same. Now today, when I try to boot up, it'll just stop at random times, sometimes it'll work though. Someone suggested to try another power supply, should I go ahead and do this first? I also noticed when my comp will lock up, the HD light is always on and the CDRom starts to spin.

If you did a fresh install of windows and you still have a problem, it may also be heat or bad memory, hard drive, etc.

Are all the case fans spinning? If you leave the case open, does the problem still occur? You can try running memtest 86 to test the memory and the manufacturer of your hard drive's test utility to see if your hard drive is failing.

If you haven't already done it, make sure all the cables are seated properly too.

This may become a trial and error thing until you find the offending component.

Can't be HD's because I've used 3 different ones and I get the same lockup/shutdown. The fans are spinning fine, I took off the side panel of my case as well. I'm thinking about trying a new PS?
