Frequent heartburn...

Don't worry, I already set up an appt. with my doctor for tomorrow. I just want to inform myself before I go.

Time to time I used have random heartburn which was a minor annoyance. It would go away quickly after drinking a glass of milk (base) but it started to build up tolerance more and more. I started to take tums and now they only provide very temporary relief.

Heartburn isn't too serious. But it's more than a moderate annoyance for me now. It happens randomly about once or twice a day...

What's a good way to 'cure' heartburn? I assume there aren't any and I have to take meds for rest of my life?

Sometimes a change in diet can help, but if you have something like acid reflux, then you'll need meds.

you may have to change your diet.

a friend of mine started getting chronic heartburn and his doc put him on some otc medication and had him stop eating spicy foods, alcohol, and some other things.

My step-dad had a similar problem. He went to the doctor and found out he had acid reflux. He was put on medication and told to change his eating habits. Apparantly certain foods and activities ( like smoking) can aggravate it. He quit somking and stopped drinking caffeinated drinks, among other things.

I'm an avid eater. I love food but I'm in good shape. I"m 180 lbs @ 5'9". I run 3 miles every 2-3 days, I do not smoke, I do not drink coffee. I don't even drink carbonated drinks....

Alcohol on the other hand... :D

drink a whole glass of milk in the morning BEFORE you have a hearburn and watch the food you eat and liquid you drink?

stay away from OJ and soda for a while. see if that helps

I've heard some people swear by inducing a small amount of vinegar at the onset of it. No joke; many believe acid reflux and the like are actually attributed to too little acid in your food churner.

He's right. This stuff is as much mental as it is physical. And this is from someone who had a problem similar to yours. It's flared up by stress so relaxing can help. Also, you do need to alter your diet.

My problems started when I was about your age (I'm 26 now). Then I went on Atkins, and it stopped. I realized that what was causing it was sugar and simple carbohydrates (white bread, rice, most kinds of noodles/pasta). I went off Atkins about 6 months later, and it came back immediately. I'm now just saying away from simple carbohydrates (I still eat some multigrain wheat breads and other complex carbs) and I have completely gotten rid of the problem again. I don't know if this would work for you, but it's worth a shot. I can eat anything else, but as long as I keep my sugars in moderation, I don't have any problems at all.

And just for the record, it's a lot easier than you think. Maybe one donut here and there, but that's it. Wheat instead of white bread. Brown rice instead of white. And if you go to an Italian restaurant, either order steak or fish.
