Frequent Disconnects: ISP or Router?

I'm using a 1-year old Linksys WRT110 with a Verizon residential DSL setup, using ethernet only at this time. I experience intermittent disconnects, where I end up disconnecting and reconnecting the power cable to get back online. I can't figure out if it's my router or the ISP that's the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Plug in computer directly to modem. See if it works fine.

Check the lights on your modem and router. Do the lights on the router seem like it rebooted? Can you login to the router website when the internet goes down?

Are you downloading torrents? What are you doing when it goes down?

The disconnects are very intermittent, so it's hard to test for what's going on. I had one happen a few minutes when my wireless house phone rang, but I'm not using a wireless connection for my PC. I'm not downloading any torrents at all. Got 2 pcs and my Iphone on the network.

I'm not sure what to look for in terms of router lights. Right now all 6 are on/bflickering. Might try connecting to the modem directly.

If house phone rings and internet goes off then you are missing some dsl filters on the phone lines.

All devices in the house except the dsl modem must be connected through filters.

Most likely ISP, but connect direct to be sure

Connected direct, experiencing intermittent disconnects. I had contacted Verizon with this problem before and they sent me a new modem. Should I get back in touch with them or am I better of switching to Comcast?

If it is a isp issue, you can call verizon.

Also, what speed are you connected at? 1.5 down? 768k? If could be possible that you are too far away from the phone company and they set you up with a too fast of a speed. They can downgrade you if you are experiencing issues to a slower speed.

My modem is showing 2688 Kbps / 864 Kbps. I live in an urban center. I can definitely try calling Verizon, but if the problem persists I fear they'll give the run-around.

I think verizon has sold off their some of their dsl areas to frontier. They just wanted to get rid of it, so it would not surprise me. They want to move everyone off of dsl to their fiber network.

Call and ask to get it fixed, if not move onto another isp.

There is also a verizon direct forum with real reps here

click verizon direct at the top

They can diagnose the issues and are usually more knowledgeable than the people you would get on the phone.

Also did you read the above post about dsl filters? Do you have those on everywhere, except the modem?

Fios isn't available for my building, I've checked.

Thanks for the heads up on the forum. I believe I have filters everywhere.

their head ends know (count) every reset/retrain - they don't have to tell you this but they know damn well if your modem has had to retrain 50 times in a day - most of the time they won't tell you of course.

Depends, if you cant get them to fix the line it might be worthwhile to change, but ultimately it sounds like a line problem to me, not a modem problem

If they even remotely correspond to your phone ringing, it's likely you've got a bad filter somewhere. Replace them.
