not to make light of horrible acts of humanity.
How many out there have some bias against middle eastern heritage?

number 51 bottom of page

The Windows 2000 French-language spell-checker suggests replacing
"anti-stress" with the word "anti-arab." The head of Microsoft's
European and Middle East operations said on Wednesday the problem
should be fixed in "a few weeks" and that customers would be offered a
new version free of charge.

Remember MS Word a couple years ago?

If you put the phrase "I believe all <insert any racist term here> should be shot, hanged, and then beaten" into the thesaurus, it comes back with "I'll drink to that"

Those Frenchies should try putting "anti taco" or "anti sorgum" and see what it comes back with...

Yeah, people are stupid. I remember a big thing about the MS thesaurus giving a reply of "I'll drink to that" if you put in the phrase "Hang all n!ggers" (except with the '!' replaced with an 'i'). However, it will also do the same thing with "Hang all KKK members", "Hang all fish", "Hang all crackers!", etc. Basically, its just a glitch. Besides, how would replacing "anti-stress" with "anti-arab" be insulting? Its a non-sensical replacement. Grow some skin and quit whining about the W2K issue. Anyways, the physical attacks are a lot more worrisome.

EDIT: bomberman beat me to it, and his phrase might be correct, but the point is the same... its a software glitch. Quit crying

<< Quit crying
who is that directed to.

That was directed to you, in regards to the W2K spell checker issue. Since the W2K issue was the only one that you quoted, it is to be inferred that it is the most important to you. As I stated, the physical attacks are much more important/worrisome. A software glitch from a company that has had a similar glitch in the past (not to mention the huge number of unrelated glitches that it has now) is not nearly the most important issue brought up in the article. BTW, every nationality that immigrated to this country has faced racism, except the WASPs, as they were the first here outside of the already present indigious population, who were shoved aside. The Germans, the Irish, the Italians, the Polish, the Hungarians, etc... virtually every ethnicity has been discriminated against. Its not right, but it happens. During WWI, the German population in the USA had many of the same sorts of crimes committed against them. In WWII, Japanese citizens on the West Coast were put in camps, for no valid reason. I'm not saying any of this is right, but I did expect this sort of backlash. One problem I have with your link is some of the points, like these (taken from #'s 15 through 30, as I didnt fell like doing this for the whole article:

16) A 57-year-old Punjabi man was shot in Yuba City, California.
Several cars of Punjabis were vandalized as well. (Masala.com chatroom)

There is no mention of his being shot because his ethnicity. Same with the cars. How many cars are there in that area, and how many are vandalized. You need to prove that it was done because of their ethnicity. Furthermore, a chatroom is not a reliable source to quote.

17) A student of either Indian or Middle Eastern origin was attacked
on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Other colleges have reported
similar stories of their students under attack. (MTV News & Seattle
Times)

Oh wow, and how many white people were attacked/mugged on that campus? No mention made of it being ethnically based crime.

23) An Indian girl was beaten to death in Long Island...Suspects are
supposedly in custody. (Masala.com chatroom)

Again... no mention of her ethnicity being a factor, or it being done in retaliation for the WTC. See above about chatroom sources.

27) On Long Island, a market in Smithtown owned by a native of
Pakistan was the target of what the police considered a probable arson
attack Wednesday morning. The entire store was burned to the ground.
(New York Times: 9/14)

OK, I'm just going to start copy/pasting... Again... no mention of her ethnicity being a factor, or it being done in retaliation for the WTC

28) In Ronkonkoma, a man was arrested on suspicion of waving a pellet
gun and shouting obscenities at a South Asian gas station worker. (New
York Times: 9/14)

South Asian!? and yet this is about racist incident since 9/11? When did it ever involve South Asians? Furthermore, how many times are white clerks shouted at and have weapons waved at them? Why didnt they make it on your list?

I could continue, but it would be pointless. A minimum of a quarter of the incidents you listed are not valid as ethnically based crimes, at least in the way you presented them. A third of those that I sampled were not valid as ethnically motovated. Quoting chatrooms is not a good way to get people to respect your sources. Nor is quoting incidents, that for all we know, are random, and including them in a list of ethnically motivated crimes.

That was directed to you
I wasn't crying about it, just making a statement.
I don't know what heritage you are, but I am of Spanish decent with a mix of latvian and japanese. My skin color is dark and am assumed as anything from mexican, to italian to middle eastern. So don't think I haven't experienced racism in my life. Especially after the attacks I get dirty looks and no service at stores. How do think I feel. Have you ever been dicriminated because of the color of your skin? The only thing I can do is act the same and don't be afraid. I already stated "not to make light of horrible acts of humanity."

Second that link is just that a link. Compiled by someone I don't know.

I really don't care if you respect me from a link. If you can't make a judgement to believe something that's your problem.

I don't know you or follow your posts, but if all you do is argue without empathy then you just prove you're ignorance. Yes south asian can be confused for middle eastern ...OPEN your eyes... Just because they're ASIAN means they are going to look a certain way? foolish.

Odd, most people get accused of ignorance for arguing with too much empathy, not too little. I guess arguing logically is now "ignorant."

<< I really don't care if you respect me from a link. If you can't make a judgement to believe something that's your problem. >>

Oh, I was making a judgment alright... and not a favorable one.

As far as experiencing racism, I am 100% Irish and traveled through Ireland, and went to Northern Ireland. Yes, I was "racially profiled" passing through the border. Maybe its not on the same scale as you, but I have experienced it in my life. Now, normally I dont correct people for their spelling and grammar mistakes, but I cant pass on this due to irony...

<< then you just prove you're ignorance >>

.
Lets break look at what that contraction stands for... "you are." Now lets put that in the sentence, "then you just prove you are ignorance." Smooth ...

In regards to the "OPEN your eyes... Just because they're ASIAN means they are going to look a certain way? foolish.", I'm tempted to create a poll on the forum just to show exactly how often people confuse asian people with middle eastern people... furthermore, if they are confused very rarely (which is my contention, they are confused very rarely/never), then the chance of this guy mistaking the clerks descent is very low. Possible, but highly unlikely. Now, if the clerk was of mixed descent, then a mis-identification is more likely... but the article did not mention that the clerk was of mixed asian descent, but asian descent.

By your contention, people of african descent are no more likely to have darker skin than mine (Irish)? Yes, on average, asian people do look different than african people who look different than white people. People's racial heritage does affect thier appearence. You even posted "Have you ever been dicriminated because of the color of your skin?" (emphasis mine). In that statement, you implied that people of non-white descent have different skin color than people of white descent.

If you post a link with no other commentary on the link, it is inferred that you agree with the link and think it is valid. Why else would you have posted it?

you've never seen a posted link as mere reference. Not necessarily agreeing with it or not.

Go ahead take a poll. You made the assumption that No asians look middle eastern. Have you ever been to asia, or the middle east? I have.

To correct my grammer is really low, especially when I see you edit your post EDITED: word replacement, and spelling
Just because I didn't go back and spell check you feel a need to degrade me. Nice.

whatever mookow. you're not worth talking to.

Hmmm... maybe you should have read my whole post, especially the "Now, normally I dont correct people for their spelling and grammar mistakes, but I cant pass on this due to irony... "

I still dont get the "argue with empathy" thing... could you explain?
