USA: Anti-Muslim bias crimes rose 1700 percent after September 11

There have been press reports of more than fifteen arsons and attempted arsons that may be part of the post-September 11 backlash. Local law enforcement agents believe that fires at six houses of worship were September 11-related hate crimes. The other press-documented cases of arson involved places of business owned or operated by Muslims, Arabs, or those perceived to be Muslim or Arab. There have been three convictions and one indictment thus far for September 11-related arsons.

On September 15, 2001, James Herrick set fire to the Curry in a Hurry restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, causing minimal damage. Herrick admitted to setting the fire because he was angry over the September 11 attacks and knew the restaurant owners were from Pakistan. A federal district court in Utah sentenced him on January 7, 2001 to fifty-one months in jail

"The federal government reported a seventeen-fold increase in
anti-Muslim hate crimes, from twenty-eight in 2000 to 481 in 2001."

Seems like it was pretty damn good in 2000. I guess it takes something 'catastrophic' to get people to become even crazier.

Your post was very misleading since you didn't even post the exact numbers. A 1700% increase seems like an epidemic, until you see that it's a 1700% increase from only 28!

maybe a typo???

anti-islam crimes in california 2001 -- 73 cases

The first report was issued on October 11, 2001 once it was clear that a widespread backlash, numbering ten incidents per day, was occurring in California; the second was issued on December 11, 2001, after the backlash had significantly decreased to one incident per day.

I suck at math but - 1 incident a day (I'm conservative) equals several hundred a year in California ALONE

section: federal hate crime statistics

from the same section

Nevertheless, the study found that many of those jurisdictions had hate crimes that were not reported to the FBI. 251 This "false-zero" reporting to the FBI is so severe that the study estimated six thousand hate crimes, almost 75 percent again as much as the total number of hate crimes reported nationwide each year to the FBI, are not included in reports to the FBI

all figures are from the justice dep from their hate crime reports

I'm really not in the mood to have another discussion with you, after all I'm a racist European pig and whatever I post is crap

read the federal hate crime section on the hrw site and do some research on the justice dept site

It's good that you're finally admitting it though. Hopefully you can be rehabilitated.

Bad ruling, but not nearly as bad as the German possibility that is in discussion.

<----Senses some mysterious explosions in downtown Paris when this is implemented

They were blowing up synagogues over the whole Palestine Israel thing, can you imagine when they can't even display their own faith

see, why choose to ignore what the law is about. it only reffers to displaying religious signs/affiliation in public schools. there is no mention about displaying their faith in public and on the streets.
since public schools are government institutions and the french government is secular, i see this as a way for them to keep religions out of public schools.

Have you ever tried to remove a devout Muslim's burka or head scarf? You'd have better luck talking Tammy Fae out of her knickers

We were discussing the fairness of the law and how it would be applied.
we were not discussing how easy or hard it would be to enforce it.

Edit: spelling errors.

I never said that you were a 'racist European pig' and what not. It's fine if you don't want to have another discussion and admit defeat. Anyways, my original point stands and shows how you again were trying to mislead people. You can cry about it and try to steer as far as possible from my point AGAIN - but it'll still be true.

Well of course things were supposedly bad after 9/11 and hate crimes do exist. I would never deny that. I don't pretend that the US is some sort of morally superior society.

Personally, I never felt any backlash.

And the title of this thread is misleading since it's anti-everything, not only anti-headscarf.

why do people never learn from history and doom us to repeat the same mistakes?

in "public" schools is the first step to in "public" period.

i hope every christian, muslim, and jew keeps on with the personal freedom to express their religion ANYWHERE. as one of the few truly secure people it seems, i ahve no problem being around a muslim, jews, or other christians expressing the god givin right atheistic socialist governments always want to TRY to take away.

i could not help but to contrast what your advocating here with you sig line.

"Conformity is the Playground of the Unimaginative"

now let me add my own thought.

"conformity enforced by law is fascism."

you need to make up your mind 'shroom, is conformity bad or good?

You gotta understand, the white Christian culture of Europe is under assault by Muslim (and other brown people) immigrants. This is merely to promote the Aryan way of life. Just like in this country how the white Christian culture is being oppressed by gays, athiests, and Mexicans.
