A pig's head was hung from one headstone and slogans insulting Islam and France's Muslim justice minister were daubed on other graves.

President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the attack as a "hateful act" and the "most inadmissible kind of racism".

About 78,000 colonial subjects of France, including many Muslims from North Africa, died in the war.

The Notre Dame de Lorette war cemetery, near Arras in northern France, is on the site of some of WWI's largest battles.

About 100 police officers have been sent to the cemetery to investigate the incident.

President Sarkozy has called for the rapid detention and punishment of those responsible.

In a similar attack in April 2007, Nazi slogans and swastikas were painted on about 50 graves in the Muslim section of the cemetery. Two men were sentenced to a year in prison for that act.

Its good to know that the president called it inexcusable racism as anything less would be unacceptable. Absolutely dispecable for what they did. I must say though - what the hell is with using Nazi signs for anything racist?
Theol hard part is trying to determine is this incident is isolated or connected to anything - something which I'm sure their police will investigate. Should we run around screaming that Europe is going to pull another holocaust? Probably not...but we should still be careful to make sure that if these responses happen, its because of people's fear and reaction to immigrants (Which happens whenever a population absorbs a group of people that are different enough) instead of an actual hatred (Which...isn't...good).

I hope not...so as long as the authorities are taking the proper steps, what will they riot against? The government is on their side this time

The use of difference among groups has been used since time immemorial as a way to channel self hate onto somebody else so one can allow the repressed and profoundly painful violence one feels toward ones parents, etc, express and find some relief in the joy of watching somebody else suffer. People are terrified of remembering who they really hate. The first time you tried that you were killed. psychically, of course.

The world that you see is made up of insane people trying to get even for what happened to them long ago.

Hate has made radicals of us all and we won't let go. We would rather die than remember and so we will. We are on the path to extinction. Everything, in the mean time, is just a dream.

Now Jews and Muslims get equal treatment! Not really a joke, just an observation.

Don't forget that Europe had another holocaust just last decade and the country in question here was involved in one of the most famous holocausts of recent times, also in the previous decade.

It is not unreasonable to say what many are already afraid of. Stop it before it truly blossoms into the real deal.

Equal treatment? perhaps, but the difference being they won't load up on the cattle cars passively on their way to the concentration camps, instead expect to see a fire and brimstone response if Europeans try anything remotely similar, just an observation.

French vandels have a long history of targeting cemetaries/grave sites.

IDK why, but it's been going on for decades.

Agreed.

Would that type of response be a good thing?

Yes definitely. Look what the Americans did to avenge the deaths of 3000 of theirs. Islam isn't that barbaric but I'd suppose there should be a strong response. I feel there wasn't a strong enough response for the two illegal wars against Islam. A good response would have been to sever all ties with the US and her allies and then see what may come. Too bad the greedy sheiks and politicians care more about filling their stomachs than the dignity of their nation and faith.

Having said that it's not for the civilians to revert to violence in a foreign state but for the Islamic states themselves. Muslims in France rioting would be illegal according to both sets of laws no matter what the French have done. Muslim governments have been far harsher on its own people than the Americans and Europeans. If the Prophet and his companions did not revert to violence while living under the Meccans despite terrible torture, humiliation and murder, why must his followers?

It's easier to understand this act if you have witnessed race relations in France first-hand. It makes race relations in the United States look like absolute harmony.

Its important to know what the French Muslims were rioting against. They were rioting against the state as an institution and not against non-Muslims 'infidels'. Granted there were probably some bad apples but the main impetus for the riots were against issues like employment racism where having the 'wrong' name or residential address is a burden.
