Just heard someone say they are never eating french fries again. It sounds like the EU is considering a ban on them or something. Anyone have the rest of the story?

honestly, does it matter? If you dont eat the fries, you'll breathe the dirty air, or drink the contaminated water, or touch the diseased plants.

Scientists have no idea if it causes cancer in humans. It might cause cancer in rats.

Its not just french fries, its ANY starch cooked at high temps, french fries, potatoe chips, breads etc etc. Its just like sweet in lo or all the other stuff that "causes cancer" but theres never been a reported case of it in humans, just rats.

Basic foods eaten by millions around the world such as bread, biscuits, crisps and French fries contain high quantities of acrylamide, a substance believed to increase cancer risk, Swedish scientists said on Wednesday.

The research carried out at Stockholm University in cooperation with Sweden's National Food Administration, a government food safety agency, showed that baking or frying carbohydrate-rich foods such as potatoes or cereals formed acrylamide, a much studied substance classified as a probable human carcinogen.

That was REALLY difficult for me to find! I had to go through the trouble of typing "french fries cancer" on Google!

That's so lame. Just like when these "researchers" found out that oranges cause cancer too because of the high volume of Vitamin C. STFU - I like oranges and I like french fries. Go find a cure for AIDS or something worthwhile and stop wasting the taxpayers gdamn money

These were swedish scientists, stupid. Your tax dollars are safe.

If you had actually read the article, you would see that they are concerned with levels of acrylamide formed in potatos and other starchy foods after frying. Acrylamide is hardly as innocuous a substance as Vit C, believe me. I use it almost daily as an ingredient in gels used to separate and view DNA samples. It is toxic to humans and at least a suspected carcinogen to boot.

Further info on acrylamide from CDC.gov

I never said our taxpayers - just in general. Taxpayers as a whole are funding these stupid programs that prove "ooh potatoes are going to kill you" - what a waste. I'm sorry but if you're not offended that everyones money is going down the drain with stupid programs like this you're the stupid one.

Read the info. Acrylamide is not something you want to be eating. I fail to see why you are whining about what may in fact be pertinent data given the massive amounts of fries consumed here in the states every year.

If you don't eat anything that is a suspected cause of cancer....what is left?

Honestly?
