Freezing...

This isn't total freezing, but every few minutes my computer will just freeze for 5-9 seconds.... usually when I do something... say, I dbl-click someone's name on AIM it will take forever to load the window; or click a folder on the start-menu, it freezes trying to load the contents.... i'm thinking this has something to do with ram (I already have 1 defective stick) but I'm not sure...

System setup:

AMD 1.4 GHz on EPoX 8K7A
256MB Crucial DDR-RAM
SB Live 5.1
Linksys LNE100TX
GeForce 3
30GIG WD 7200 RPM

Any recommendations on ways to fix the problem? Thanks,

Have you tried virus scan, my computer was doing the same thing and i had a virus from an mp3 that I downloaded, well actually it was a .mp3.vbs, but anyway it was doing the same thing.
