I just bought a Visiontek GeForce4 Ti4600 and now I can't run a 3d application for longer than about 30-60 seconds until my computer completely locks up. This has happened occasionally just while on desktop, but not after having had the computer run for a few hours. Things I have checked: I have decent cooling for my system, have tried 2-3 sets of drivers, have the video card as the sole hardware on IRQ 5. There isn't any warning of any kind before it happens. Performance doesn't drop, graphics don't go screwy, nothing. It just stops. Any help would be wonderful.

The system is not stable... is this a new rig or was it running stable before the GF4 was added? Could be a problem with cooling, etc. Provide more information and we will try to help you with the problem.

I am having a strange problem with my brand new Visiontek Ti4600. My system will boot up, but within a few minutes, the display cuts off
(as if to go into standby mode) and the computer locks up. The interesting thing is that this often happens after opening an Internet Explorer (Internet Exploder?) window. In fact, I could run 3DMark 2001 without problems. It is the "normal" 2D usage of the system where I run into the most trouble.

My system consists of the following components: EPoX 8K7A motherboard (AMD 761 chipset), AMD Athlon 1.4GHz, Visiontek Ti4600, 3Com 3C905TX network card, SoundBlaster Live Audigy, 512MB Crucial DDR Memory, running Windows XP Professional. I've tried the latest nVidia drivers (28.32) without success.

I should point out that my system was previously running an ELSA GeForce 2 GTS card without any problems whatsoever. I've gone back to this card just so I can use my computer. I would find it very hard to believe that this is a heat problem or anything of that nature.

One person suggested that I try this card in another computer. I did this, and much to my surprise, it worked fine there. That system was an Abit BE6-II with an Intel Pentium III 800, 320 MB PC-100 memory, Sound Blaster Live Audigy, 3Com Network card, and Windows XP Professional. I used the same drivers (28.32) in both systems. With that said, I have come to the following conclusions:

1) It's not a software / driver issue. I am running the same OS and display drivers in both system. One works, the other doesn't.
2) It's not a conflict with other hardware on my system. I'm quite sure of that. The two systems I've tested have identical peripheral hardware, with the exception of motherboard, processor, and memory type.
3) It's not a power supply or cooling problem. I have an Antec case with 350 watt power supply and plenty of cooling.
4) The problem must have something to do with my motherboard and/or BIOS settings, although my GeForce 2 GTS card works just fine.
5) Perhaps the Visiontek card is not compatible with many systems. But then again, just a few days ago someone reported that his
Geforce 4 was hanging his system in the exact same way. So I have to think that it is not so much Visiontek as it is the GeForce 4 reference design in conjunction with either the AMD 761 chipset and/or my BIOS settings that are the root of the problem.

Anyone else with this problem? Anyone with any solutions? Any help would be appreciated.

It really bites paying $400 for a video card that doesn't work!!!

fourwood could be a few things anyway what OS are you using and what motherboard? Try disabling all video shadowing in bios and disable fastwrites and disable system bios cacheable, try running in AGP 2x or even 1x and see if that improves stability, install latest monitor drivers if possible and on some boards in bios it allows you to increase the AGP voltage slightly to the graphics card.

Plinker you can try some of the tips above also for your board which is an AMD 761 chipset did you try installing the latest AMD AGP Driver for 2000/ XP
5.33 from
here ?

btw Plinker welcome to AT forums :)

Plinker try removing every nonessential component from your system and see if it still has that problem (every PCI card, etc). I had a similar problem with a gf4 mx440 and it was mysteriously fixed by moving the soundcard to a different PCI slot. Strange there was no IRQ sharing or conflicts but just moving the soundcard fixed it.
