Freezing WinXP and Win 98

Hello

How would you recommend I go about diagnosing and eventually fixnig a PC that will freeze during the load up screen of WIN XPoad up to the WinXP screen OR after loading up and freezing at the desktop?

I have a WIN98 system that does the SAME thing!

Is there a program I can use? Keep in mind, most times I cannot even get past the winXP loading screen or WIN 98 loading screen. What programs do pc tech use? or what techniques?

thank you

Paul

Step one, try safe mode. If that fails, consider a repair then a reinstall.

Step two, remove any changes (remove new hardware, software, etc).

Step three, remove all unnecessary components (extra usb, extra ram, mouse or keyboard, etc). Anything can cause a lockup.

Step four, a hard drive diagnostic can usually rule out the hard drive, memtest is a good test for memory.

Step five, reseat everything that is left, could be a loose heatsink, dead fan, etc. Check your temperatures in the bios.

If all else fails, it is time to start swapping some parts. Like most people, I tend to blame the power supply first then go from there.

Another simple test is to leave the pc sitting in the bios, if it locks there you know you have a hardware problem and you can ignore software.
