freezing problems..

I reinstalled my friends computer because he just switched from AOL to RR and was haven a hard time with it. My friend has a ASUS mother board with SiS chipset. 400MGHZ CPU. 4gig hd. Windows 98SE. After I installed 98 i was installin the newest drivers froms SiS's site. Alls well so installed winzip for a driver download. No glitches yet. So i started installing adobe's free acrobat reader at 99% installed it froze. I rebooted the computer after i tried Ctrl, Alt, Delete, and alt, f4 with no success. when rebooted i tried going into MY computer after i double clicked nuthing. I rebooted again rite clicked on the desktop. Froze. And everytime i try it freezes when i click something. If i wait the screensaver comes on and that works just fine. But when i click after i reboot. It freezes. I havent installed norton or a firewall yet. Before i reinstalled their comp there was a storm and i think a surge and they didnt have to good a surge protecter. anways theirs died so i had them buy a 300W Antec PS. The antec was kinda bigger so i had to jam the cd power cord in and it jammed up (just a nother detail) any ideas???

Either they don't have enough memory or their memory is bad or their computer is junk from the ligthning. I've heard of computers working after being hit and gradually over time they fail. Try a clean install of 98 again and don't install anything and see what happens.
