Freezing on boot

I just did a clean XP Pro install on an old pc for my mom and it was working last week. Now it freezes on the Win XP boot screen (where the blue bars scroll) but boots fine in safe mode.

No changes have been made since I did the clean-install (HW or SW) but I did try to install a slave HDD on the secondary IDE channel but it didn't work so I just left it in the config that was originally working.

Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting?

Perhaps try an F8 boot and select last know good configuration. This could be a scrogged driver.

I saw this happen a few weeks ago- turned out to be a bad power supply. It wasn't drawing as much power in safemode as in windows, apparently.

Try the VGA mode boot in the F8 start...if its a scrogged graphics driver it should bypass it.
