Freezing Issue Stemming from CD-ROM

The computer has been working fine for upwards of a month, but now whenever a CD is placed in the Lite-On DVD/CDRW Combo drive, the mouse will freeze when it tries to read the CD. When the CD is ejected, the mouse will unfreeze, and the computer will usually work normally. Sometimes, another freeze occurs after removing the CD forcing a hard reboot.

This is happening with all CD's. Tomorrow, I will verify that the cable is attached firmly to the drive, but I was wondering if anyone has another potential diagnosis. The drive worked fine earlier today, but suddenly began having problems. Could it also be a software compatibility issue? No hardware changes have been made since the build.

Thanks in advance...

Motherboard drivers installed? DVD drive as Slave or Master? DMA enabled for DVD drive?

Few things to check:

1) BIOS Update for the Motherboard
2) Updated Motherboard drivers
3) updated firmware for DVD drive

It is possible that the DVD drive has packed it in, but it could be dirty as well. Open the drive and give it a good blow. If you have a spare cable, try plugging that in to see if it makes a difference. Also, if it's Slaved on the Primary disk controller, try switching it to the Secondary as Master.
