freezing..is it video card or Windows?

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP with all patches save the spk (because it killed my system twice).

I have an ATI RAEDON LE video card...yes I know it has it's memory clocked lower than normal... Shut up! It's all I could afford.

Anyway... After Christmas (no true event prompting this as no changes were made) I started having problems.

DVD's show the worst problems. Anywhere from a minute to a half an hour into the movie, the picture will freeze, and the audio will continue (for a second all the way to a minute). The mouse will still move, keyboard is dead. Then the audio will become caught in say...1/3 to 1/4 of a second loop, there will be a single system speaker beep and the mouse will stop moving.

This will hold for a while (30 seconds to 10 minutes) and then it will reboot all by itself. When I log back into windows XP (if it rebooted by itself) it will give me the very vague "Windows Experienced some trouble with ATI RAEDON. Sorry for the inconvenience." message.

This also happens to a much less extent with video files (both AVI and mpg), and it is likely to happen when I switch from window to full screen viewing.

So my question is..is this a windows problem? I'm using the latest drivers that I've been using for a year and a half. Or is this a video card problem? It isn't overclocked and it is still fairly cool to the touch...

Any ideas?

😉

The first thing I would try is new video drivers
and after that I would think it's the video card , (you can find very good deals on the for sale and trade fourm)

😉

Are you using software or hardware decoding? If software, try uninstalling and reinstalling your DVD player software.

I had a similar problems when playing games in Win98 and it turned out to be my Sound Card Hardware exceleration settings in DirectX were turned up to high.

And also, I had similar problems playing DVDs in Win2000Pro and It turned out to be the DVD Player (Superb 16x48x Star2000 DVD-Rom)... I bought a Lite-On 16x48x and everything works great now.

Hey thanks for all your responses!

Amber: These are the latest ATI drivers and I've been using them since before I'v had the trouble. I have un-installed and reinstalled these drivers 3-4 times.

bolomite: Software decoding :/ and I've also tried the uninstall/re-install of this several times.

Hmm...my dvd player compatibility check just found some funny stuff with DirectX...getting 9.0...will report success/failure.
