freezing in-game issues

i had just built my new rig today with a 3500+ and bfg 6800 gt. i went to go play source, and after every few seconds the game would freeze. sounds goes out and i cant move. then the gameplay resumes, but only for a few seconds later for it to happen again. is there something wrong with the card or anything else? something im missing? its just getting really annoying, because when i play cs 1.6, it doesnt do this. thanks
