Freezer7 Pro on an overclocked Q6600?

I know it's not the optimal air solution, but how would a Freezer7 Pro (w/AS5 of course) do an overclocked (from stock to 3.2GHz) Q6600?

The best solution is a Tuniq Tower, I know. But that's another $50 plus I've got to take the MB out of the case.

I have good cooling (Antec P180) and the Freezer fires directly at the rear exhaust fan.

You probably won't be able to hold it at 3.2 with a mere Freezer Pro. 2.8Ghz would probably be more reasonable.

What are you doing 3.2 on now? Why wouldn't you just use whatever cooler is doing it for you?

3.0ghz should be doable, 3.2ghz will probably be pushing it, depending on how good your chip is and how much vcore is needed to get to 3.2ghz. And of course how good your casefans are. 3 antec tricools at medium will obviously outperform 3 antecs at low. The freezer pro´s are pretty good coolers, even though they don´t cost all that much.

Sorry for not specifying my current rig specs earlier. Currently running an E6400 @ 3.20GHz (400x8) @ 1.340v; just a hair over stock (1.320v)

It idles at 46/48C (Intel TAT reported temps) and stress temps are 58/60C. Like I said; not the best, but pretty decent.

I've got my P180 pretty much sealed up. Lower chamber for the PS is sealed off as good as can be. Same for upper chamber. Airflow is good. With all fans on LOW, there is detectable airflow in front of the case as well as at the rear. I also vacuum the front bezel and filters every week...yeah, I'm a geek. :p

I know my Freezer7 is working; it gets pretty warm to the touch when I run the box w/the side of the case removed.

I also have the CPU fan controlled via software...I run it at low speeds for less noise at the expense of higher temps. That could easily be rectified...

But, the Tuniq Tower is just a better HS, period. It might be worth the $50 and the ass pain to install it just to NOT have to deal w/the inreased fan speeds.

I got 2.9 with stock so I'm sure he can get more than 3.2 with a Freezer7. Actually 2.8 with stock isn't too rare.

You know, that's one thing I've been curious about: Is the stock cooler that comes with the Q6600 any better/bigger than the stock cooler that came with my E6400 C2D? If it's the same POS cooler, than the Freezer will be just fine; it's 100% better than that stock POS.

Thanks for the input, guys. Bump for the late night crowd. :)

Somewhere, there has to be a Freezer-Pro review that compares it with at least one other popular cooler. Once you've found that, you can compare it to the Anandtech May '07 comparison review of some twenty other coolers to see where it stands.

It also depends on which stepping of the Q6600 you get -- the older B3 stepping will run hotter, needs more juice, and tops out at 3.2Ghz with multiplier 9 with the best ThermalRight cooler if you keep the Vcore below about 1.42V. The G0 will go somewhat farther -- at least to 3.4Ghz (with the TR-Ultra-Extreme) I think.

But -- like I said -- a comparison review to compare with the Anandtech comparison reviews will give you an idea of what to expect.

Thanks, BonzaiDuck. I'll search for reviews so I have an idea of what to expect. I did search for reviews before I bought the cooler (last year) but that was for cooling a C2D. ArcticCooling's page does have the Quad Core listed as a "recommended CPU" but that doesn't mean much.

We'll find out for sure how good it does; I just ordered a Q6600 from Newegg. I also ordered another 120mm fan for my P180; right now I've just got the two exhaust fans pulling air thru, but no helper fan up front. More airflow never hurts.

How far would a q6600 go with SLA stepping?

Edit:I did my reading and found out tha SLA mean Go or better steppings :p

SLACR=G0 stepping...what I'm hoping Newegg sends me. Seems most folks are getting a G0 these days; hope I'm one of them.

"How high will it go?" depends on many things. The CPU itself, your cooling, how much voltage you feed it, what temps you're prepared to live with, your motherboard/memory/power supply etc.

Generally speaking, with good air cooling and moderate voltage increases, 3GHz is a breeze, 3.2 is typical and 3.4-3.6 is possible.

I'd be very happy with 3.2GHz at stock voltage and would most probably leave it right there. :)

Yes, I'm quite sure the G0 will go to 3.2 Ghz with VCore somewhere in the 1.2+ to 1.40V range. It actually could be better, but I've been watching what people have posted here, and it definitely goes higher at lower voltages. The thermal power is also lower, and I've seen people post over-clocks in 3.4 to 3.6 range, as you've said.

My B3 will go to 3.2 with 1.4125V Vcore. At 3.0, the stable Vcore is 1.313V.

But I would select my air-cooling options from the top-third of the bench-tests in the May 07 Anandtech (U-120-Ex) review comparison -- or something that would fit among those. That comparison has enough competing test-entries that it can be basis for extrapolated ratings if there are other comparison reviews for the product you're looking at. Something better than the TR-120-Ex could appear from elsewhere -- or maybe it already has.

Nobody here seems to have found anything that good yet.

If I plan on OC the q6600 to 3.2-3.3 should I go with liquid cooling or get a top brand air cooling product? If I went higher then 3.3 would I see a big difference in performance gaming wise?

I have the quad stock cooler but I've never seen the dual core cooler, I heard somewhere that the quad is the same but with a faster fan. I'm thinking of replacing it as it is loud.

I load at about 69 degress...

Q6600 G0-stepping should reliably OC to 3.4 Ghz on air-cooling with good airflow and high-end heatpipe cooler (ThermalRight Ultra-120-Extreme or Ultima 90; Sunbeam Tuniq, etc.)

My "two-cents-worth" draws from several "meetings-of-the-minds" here over the past six to eight months.

Reducing temperatures through water-cooling will definitely get you a few extra hundred Megahertz, but if you bump up the VCORE too much above the retail-box "maximum," you increase the risk of CPU failure even if you keep the temperatures down. Our water-cooling guru here has his G0 OC'd to 3.7 -- and he's less than 10% over the recommended maximum VCore.

I can't make the decision for you. You'll spend extra money on a good water-cooling rig. But you can certainly OC the G0 stepping nicely on air -- just "not as nicely as H20."

With the right air-cooling preparations, this "not-as-nicely" over-clocking can leave you with temperatures somewhat less than the stock cooler with stock CPU speed settings. I like to think this is a comfortable retention of CPU longevity, together with "within-maximum" VCORE, and a nice increase in performance.

I'll certainly let everyone know when I decide to spend a pile on top-end water-cooling components and realize the full-potential of my custom-modded case. If and when I do it, it's not going to be something rinky-dink or out-of-the-box-Sanyo-Dinky.

i'm doing 3.4 currently with my f7p and q6600. 1.27vcore. idles/load :: 27/40 @ 70F room.

i actually got it to 3.6 with vcore of 1.38 but the load temp went to 60F so i dropped it back down immediately.

LOUISSSS; your temps are really good. Are your CPU temps measured with CoreTemp?

I've not had too much time to devote to overclocking my current setup (G0 on a P965 chipset board) and right now am sitting at 9x333=3.0GHz.

I use CoreTemp for measuring CPU temps. With voltage on AUTO and room temp at 21C I idle at 38C across all cores which is pretty good, I think. Stress temps (P95 on all 4 cores) never tops 56C and when I game the temps are actually mid-40s!

I have an Abit IP35 Pro coming next week and I'll be going for my hallowed 400x8 at that time. :) We'll see what the temps are like.

MichaelD, you'll have to let us know if you get the SLACR (G0 stepping) Q6600 from Newegg. I was going to buy my Q6600 from them, but if you click the manufacturer's info link under the specs on the page for the Q6600 it links to info about the model with B3 so I didn't wanna risk it. ClubIT was selling an advertised SLACR for like 10 bucks cheaper (if there's any chance to cancel your order). I've been told the G0 stepping will OC to 3-3.2 easily on an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro which is why I ordered one. If my system gets set up soon, I'll let you know how I do.

My Q6600 is at 3GHz on a freezer 7 pro, idles around 28, max load temp is no more than 56!!!

Some of you guys dont have it seated properley or case cooling is bad for you im guessing....

Just to let you guys know, Just cuz one person is claiming a temp does not mean you'll get that temp.

Temp has a lot of factors which need to be calculated.

1. Ambients: MOST important.
2. Mounting:
3. How is the IHS and Heat Sink Flatness
4. Voltage and Overclock on the CPU <Also some chips are just naturally a tad cooler or hotter then the others>
5. Bios on Mobo as well as MOBO. Yes bios can sometimes give you cooler or warner load temps. <Found this out by a guru @ XS systems>

Unless you have everything identical you can never take a person's temp messurement as what your getting. You need to look at the Delta of ambient entering the sink - leaving the sink.

Then also calculate the delta from idle to load. And a ton of other things.

I received my CPU last Friday (two weeks ago) from Newegg and it was indeed a G0.

I haven't had much time to devote to overclocking it; right now I'm sitting at 333*9=3GHz. Honestly, works' been a PITA and what little free time I've had, I've been playing Hellgate: London. :D That's what all this shiny equipment is for, afterall. ;)

I've got an Abit IP35-Pro on the way and that should overclock this Quad much better than my Gigabyte P965-DS3. I'll be going for the gold on the Abit board! I'd be totally happy with 400*8=3.2GHz. That 400FSB really makes a difference. I can feel a degradation in the "snappiness" of the system with the 333FSB vs. a 400FSB.

Limit max temp in Coretemp to 70C. You could push up to 75C for about 2 hours (Othos).
