Freezer trick question

I've seen it work a few times, but its not a very high percentage. It works more often in drivers where the motor or bearings are dieing, rather then the read/write errors, but its still worth a shot.
 
I used to have an old Novell 3.1 server that needed the hard drive tapped with a screw driver to boot the system.

Good times.
 
don't let it get wet, i put it into a zip lock bag, then put it in the freezer for an hour
then quickly take it out and plug it up before it warms up too much

It has worked for me (every time so far). (The problem I had was that my secondary drive would make a clicking sound, then a few seconds later the computer would freeze up. That happened on 2, maybe 3 drives before I started putting them in external enclosures because I figured it was heat-related)
 
Definitely put it in a ziplock. Let it freeze for as long as you can. Then when you take it out, plug it in, boot it up, and get off whatever you need as fast as you can because it will heat back up right away and could go bad again.
 
Remember to suck all of the air out of the plastic bag when you put it in the freezer. That should reduce the chance of condensation shorting something in the drive
