I'm looking for a freeware (or trial, I only have a few files I need to do) program that will allow me to cut portions out of a video to remove completely from the source file and to save the cut portion as a separate file.

Any recommendations?

Thanks everyone, this program is awesome but how can I save my changes without saving as a whole new file?

there was a site that used to be

http://www.vcdhelp.com

it has a ton of domains now, i think videohelp.com is the real one.
anyway, its has TONS of awesome tutorials on how to convert with almost every piece of software out there. links to all the free ones on how to do pretty much every type of video things.
easy to use and i have found it to be especially helpful with the above program.

I don't mean to threadjack - I just didn't want to start another thread about VirtualDub.

Anyway, let's say I've got some xvid-encoded video clips that I want to splice. You know, maybe remove a 20-minute scene from the middle, the first 10 minutes, the last 3 minutes, etc. Simple stuff. I've noticed that VirtualDub re-encodes the xvid material so that there is noticable degradation in video quality. Is there anything that won't re-encode from scratch? (I want the final output to be in a compressed format, preferably identical to the original so that there is no loss in quality.)

edit: I checked videohelp but nothing seemed to address lossless splicing...

if you're just cutting out segments, then under "Video" select Direct stream copy instead of Full processing.
