Freeware to convert .mpg to .mov ?

I need to convert some .mpg files to .mov so i can be able to drag the slider to move back and forth several frames as fast and as slow as I want (in Quicktime or Quicktime Alternative)

It seems like there are no guides for this conversion?!?

Any help would be appreciated.
 

is the problem you can't fast forward etc? then use virtualdub to reinsert the keyframes (select that extended option before opening)

or does it have to be .mov? I think quicktime is proprietary, and freeware converters aren't available....

I think quicktime pro is only $30
