Freeware hard drive defragger?

Can someone recommend me a hard drive defragger? One that doesn't need to be run in Safe Mode unlike the Windows XP one.

Diskeeper Lite has that annoying pop up that shows up periodically saying my hard drive like OMGWTF 1.05 fragmented! computer going to explode! And I can't find a way to disable it.

Well, unless if I disable my virus scanner and other background programs and not run Firefox or anything on it, then yes. But that practically is like safe mode.

If all that software won't let you run defragger, then get rid of it. I can browse and have my AV running while I defrag.

So defrag late at night while the computer is idle?

I don't understand why people are so obsessed with defragging anyway. I rarely defragment my hard drive and I never have any performance issues.

Yeah I don't know why either. I only defrag after I install/uninstall lots of software, so rarely. The performance boost helps only in certain specific situations.

Why would you need to do that?

cuz windows defragger will restart itself if any background programs are running, including AV's.

So anyone here want to answer the question on why I originally started this thread?

That was certainly true in the 9x world due to the locking mechanism in place, but it's not true of the NT/2k/XP platform. So, we have answered your question, the one included with XP doesn't need to be run in Safe mode.

True, but I'm wondering if maybe he's having a software conflict somewhere.

Certainly possible, but the built in cmd line defragger doesn't have a restart mode, thats what's confusing me. I certainly never need to disable anything when I run it (of course, I just schedule a 5am run on the boxes and ignore it)
