i am working in a office of a big company. Licensed softwared is in used there. Some licenses are provided by our central office. Softwares without licenses are strictly prohibited there. The problem is I am using some freeware that I need it for supporting my tasks & for my own entertainment. Those are 7Zip, WinZip (evaluation version), irfanview, winamp, etc. I need advises that I still use those kinds of freeware. I heard that some freewares only use for personal only rather than corporate / company / organization.

regards.

You have to look up the licenses for each bit of software you use. Some are more restrictive than others.

I'm not sure why you'd need both WinZip and 7-Zip, as 7-Zip should meet your needs for zip files. Many big companies have enterprise licenses for utilities such as WinZip. Often its just a matter of submitting a software request and the licensed version will be pushed to your workstation.

Irfanview is not free for commercial use.

Frankly, I'm surprised you're allowed to install your own software at all.

You're on your way to getting canned if you are using company resources for your entertainment purposes.

I would bet that your IT department has similar software for you to use to complete your tasks. They may charge your department for the licensing fees etc, but they probably have it for you. Using unlicensed and unapproved software may be a violation of the IT security protocol/standards/whatever, so it could be grounds for dismissal if you have random programs on your machine. Why dont you contact the help desk and see what they say?

Our IT dept provides licensed program for our main tasks only (Win2000, MS Office, Some Core programs for our financial operation, those many use in banking / financial company). It doesn't have supporting/additional programs that we should use them like acdsee, winzip, Remote Administrator, etc.

I know I still able to accomplish my tasks without the additional program above. The use of additional software program making very effective for my job.

Somebody wants advise me, which freeware is for commercial use (the term & conditions makes me dizzy to read them, too many text & i am not speaking english natively),

I use:
1. Winzip (evaluation version)
2. 7Zip (i need it for "rar extension)
3. PDF Creator
4. WinAmp (free lite version) - for my entertainment only
5. Anyconverter (for video converter) - for my entertainment only
6. DVD Player OEM Version
7. Some reminder software like freebie notes, etc.

I also need capable freeware to almost perfectly substitute our Remote Adminstrator, ACDSee, etc.

One more question, Is "the commercial use" is the same as "company use". I only use the freewares for accomplish my tasks only. I don't distribute them commercially to other parties / buyers.

Thanks for your advice.

1. Delete
2 7Zip replaces WinZip
3 Use Open Office Writer to create PDFs, and Foxit to view them
4 Use WMP
5 don't know
6 Use VLC
7 Use Notepad or even better Notepad++

Commercial use is generally taken to be the same as company use. Some packages are more lenient in that regard than others.

1. Use software they authorize.
2. Why are you using software they prohibit?
3. You work for them... can you be replaced?
