Looking for a freeware plugin for IE (takes no system resources, does not sit in tray, etc.) for my father, whom refuses to use any browser other than IE (that is right, he is a 20 year IT vet and refuses to use opera or firefox:Q) anyways, his current adblocking program stopped being free a while back and they have not updated the free version in several years, so as you can expect, it does not work all that great anymore.

anyone know of any Ad-Block clones for IE that can be installed by itself?

Proxomitron: http://www.proxomitron.info/

It will actually remove ads from anything that goes through its proxy. SPYAD is less intrusive, though, and might work just as well. Nothing as good as Adblock (and I use IE regularly). My stance is if you know what you're doing, you'll hardly ever have infections with IE SP2, but for people like my mom, Firefox is a must.

I forgot to mention. He also refuses to upgrade from 2K. Was looking more for something that you can right click on the ad, cut it off at its root and block it, like ad-block, since that is how his free version of Ad-Shield works (worked)

Are you also wanting to block popups or just the ad banners on websites?

Mainly ad banners, so many things out there to block pop ups right now.

use a HOSTS file? not easily updateable, but it should catch a lot.

or just let him suffer with ads, since he is using IE.

OK well I made (just for the 'challenge') a very primitive, unintrusive, and transparent 'middle-man' program to replace your IE. No system tray icons, etc. You'll need to replace the IEXPLORE.exe in program files with a program called Replacer. First, though, just run my replacement IE program and see if the popup blocker works on it. This isn't yet another custom browser. This just starts IE and hooks on to it which is the most reliable way to do it besides writing an addon (which is quite hard and usually has addon toolbars clogging up your browser). Hold down <CTRL> or <SHIFT> to allow popups temporarily. Otherwise, they are all blocked.

IE no popup: http://home.comcast.net/~asmatte/IEnopop.zip
Visual Basic source code (no viruses here): http://home.comcast.net/~asmatte/IEnopop_src.zip
Replacer: http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/

Unzip Replacer somewhere, run replacer.cmd and follow the instructions.
Replace IEXPLORE.exe with my middle-man IEnopop program above.

Another plus of this is that it doesn't interfere with other applications that host the WebBrowser control unlike some addons.

When a popup is blocked, the status bar says so. Tell me if you have any issues. Anyone is free to use this if they haven't taken the plunge to IE XP SP2 (or Firefox) yet.

Note: this only works with IE6, I believe. It will work in Win2K and WinXP. It may need modifications to work in Win9X.
