Freestyle Fighting/ mma/ grappling

I went to my first freestyle fighting or mixed martial arts class on Tuesday and DAM it was GREAT.

I'm no lazy person and I do a lot of sports and activities but this was a work out for me.

I've been a fan of ufc, pride and mixed martial arts for a long time but never managed to get to a club to train in mma. But Tuesday I went for my first time after going to see my 2nd event live on Saturday. Cage Rage II in London, my first was UFC 39 in London also.

I went had a training session after not being perticularly active for the past 5 months. I've managed about 7 weight lifting sessions, Basketball once and twice a week at times, rock climbing once and gymnastics once in the past 5 months or so that I've been at Uni. Usually I weight lift 3x a week, Gymnastics once and rock climb once a fortnight. But being at Uni I've done considerably less 🙁

Actual mma at the club:

Training started off good for mma.
With a good warm up that wasn't crappy. I'll know a good warm from a bad warm up.
The class was for 2hrs so it had plenty of time to train, learn new techniques practice them, practice older stuff and then to spar 50%, and practice more, spar 80% then to spar freestyle doing anything you want within the rules.

I went up against different people each time you spar.

I was first up against this guy that was 4" taller then me. I'm 5"10 and use to weight 77kg ripped and I guess I weigh about 74kg less ripped 🙁. I controlled this guy well. He was about the same weight as me but not as strong. I used my rugby experience to take him down and used my strength to beat him. Didn't submit him just practiced shooting at him.

Next guy was thig big guy. He was about 220lbs easily and about my height. He was big and musclely and you could tell he hit the gym from his phsique but I guessed that he didn't do much for his legs as most people don't. Went to grapple with him. Throw some light punches (no gloves so no hitting too hard) then I went in to shoot for him. Got him then he turned my back and he had full mount on me. Then I used my legs and strong mid section to turn him over. He landed badly and hurt his ankle then we had to stop.

Next guy was a guy that was about 6'2 and easily weighed more then me. I guess about 85kg at least. Again we started off to punch and he started to kick my legs a bit. I wasn't bothered. I throw some kicks to him also. Again I was more aggressive and shot in for for his legs. Got him. Mounted then went to get a keylock on his left arm. Didn't quite work then I went for an arm bar but that didn't work as hes been going for a while and had good defence. He tried to turn me over but couldn't. He he some how mange to get my head (can't remember how now) then "almost" got a headlock on me but didn't quite have it suck in. If he had it suck I would have been his bitch and I would have submitted or suffocated. I struggled and managed to get out then I went quickly to his back and went to sink in a rear neck choke. Again he had good defence and didn't let me have a good sink in to his neck. We battled some more then I was on my back but I had suck in a choke and no way he could get out and I was suffocating him. He shortly taped out and I won 😀.

DAM it felt good to beat him. I bet he was suprised at how strong or deceving my strength is for my size.

I say if you want to get in shape and like to spar or you want to learn I'd STRONGLY suggest you go out and train in freestyle fighting/ mma. You will get better training here then most martial arts and it works. You learn to strike and spar which is sadly lacking in most martial arts.

Just wanted you guys to know that I had fun and will be going every week. Too bad its on Basketball training day for the Uni though 🙁

And have you been in other styles of "traditional" martial arts? If so, have you tried all of them? (More to the point: try going up to a Muay Thai Boxer / Kyokushin Karateka / Wing Tsun Practitioner and saying that crap to him) Don't make opinions of things you don't know about.

And the fact that you held your own against people in that class in your first class says a *lot* of the class.

I've done varies martial arts "actually".

I've done Judo, Muay Thai, Lau Gar Kung Fu and Wing Chun. I'd stuck with the Wing Chun as it was the best out of those that I've trained in and the teacher was better.

In my opinion any style is going to be pretty decent as long as the club and teacher is good. A style will be crap if the club or teacher isn't good. I left the others as I didn't think much of them. And the opinions I don't know about I do know about them. I've trained in them and didn't like the clubs that *I* went to. Your clubs may be better or the best in the world but the ones I went to weren't great. I also want to compete and fight the arts I did, didn't offer the type of competition I want to end up in.

Up until I see one good fighter in any art that you mentioned actually use his style *solely* then I'll say that is the best or he is the best. In my opinon the better fighter will use bits of everything to make his own to make him a better fighter. In all the mma compeitions you see you don't see any good fighter from soley one style fight and compete well. I know the Muay Thai guys are great strikers but when they get pulled to the ground they get owned.

I held my own as I've done various martial arts training of my own. I know how to do simple holds and I'm fast and strong. Doesn't take much to choke a guy out or get him to submit when you have a choke set does it? Last year I was South East Champion in Olympic Weight U21. I've played Rugby at a high level also. I was scouted to play for the London Broncos Rugby league team but had to give up for travel reasons. And since we were mostly grappling I had a very good basis through Rugby for shooting in for the legs and taking them down. Also I didn't fight everyone. Only some of them. I was training with this other guy he was one of the instructors and he did OWN me. I gave it a good go but his movement and he technique was much better and made me tap out as would others at the club. Another guy at the club had recently won a tournament on Sunday that Roryce Gracie was the referee at.

I also said *most*, I didn't say *all* did I. As I know Muay Thai is very good for mma, judo will help and others. I said you learn to strike and spar. You don't spar that much in other arts of Kung Fu as its not practical. I did Wing Chun, we did spar but we wouldn't spar to the degree that we did at the club.

I'm not saying that MMA is the "best" style there is as apparently as you think as it is. I know plenty of people that can use a single style of martial arts to overcome the style's deficiencies and do what they need to do. And lastly, you're using the excuse of "competitions"? You should know by now if you have all that experience, that "fighting" and "sparring" is completely different - and you're using competition rules as the basis for judging other styles? Please. True MMA may be the best style for you, but don't be a dumbass and belittle other styles while doing so.

You don't have to call a "dumbass" thank you.

I'm not belittling any style. I didn't say it was *crap* or anything. Did you not read the part where I said all styles are good as the club and teacher? If your club and teacher are not very good then no matter what your style is not going to be that great.

Of course they are in rules but the rules are fair to everyone. You can do most things apart from eye gouge, fish hooking and that use to be IT. No you have no low blows to the groin and no knees, elbows etc depending on what type of competition.

I do agree a fight in real life is different to sparring. In real life you don't perticularly want to go to ground as the other guys friend might want to bottle you or kick you in your back etc.

I'd like to comment how affectice can a person who practices a martial art be, if they have not sparred anywhere near full conctact or in a fight condition? I bet most people are not. Like in the same way you have guys that do wrestling in high school beat the guy that does kung fu. The guy that does wrestling is very conditioned and the kung fu guy attends his club once a week and doesn't do much physically.

Well, if you have to belittle other styles to boost your own, I'd most certainly call any who does that a dumbass. I don't *have* to say that my roommate, when he constantly confuses me and my roommate (who looks absolutely nothing like me) while trying to make fun of me is an idiot, but I say it anyhow.

And you said that all styles are good as long as you have a good teacher/school? Then am I just hallucinating this from your first post?

You will get better training here then most martial arts and it works.

Are you not insinuating that most other styles do not "work"? Did you add in a little disclaimer that says "unless your school/teacher is good" - yes, you did add that later on, but then you're contradicting yourself, aren't you? And if the martial arts doesn't work, what does having a good school or a teacher of that style have to do with anything, if it doesn't work in the first place? Dumbass.
