GoGamer has this for $3.99 - Link

The reason that this is a killer deal is that Volition released the source code to Freespace 2 and the engine has been updated for OpenGl and DX8. You can get the engine here. More info here.

One more step - Freespace 1 was ported to the Freespace 2 engine, you can get that here. This disk will 1): get you legal, and 2) give you all the orginal assets for the game.

Freespace 2 is one of my favorite games and the new engine is very impressive. Choose "dirt cheap" shipping and you can have hours of fun for ~$6.00 with the first campaign.

Enjoy,
Bod

Freespace is great. Wing Commander 1 - 4 were great too.
Wing Commander 3 was the best of the bunch.

Whatever happened to Chris Roberts?
He disappeared after his WC movie bombed...

Freespace series are the BEST games - the most underrated of all time (Like Catherine Wheel is to Rock and Roll)

I loved Freespace 2, but never played the original. This sounds like a great opportunity, but how straight-forward is this upgrade stuff, and does all this stuff play OK with WinXP? I thought I heard that Freespace 2 didn't work under XP.

Whatever happened to all the space sim combat games? Imagine what XWing would look like if it was released today.

I've been playing Freespace 2, I wonder if I ran the compatibility wizard when I installed it, I can't remember.

As far as

Honestly, the beam weapons alone make FS2 >> FS1.

Also, FS2 works fine in XP...just set the compatibility mode to 98/Me and go. I have that game installed, it's great.

Curious if anyone can recommend a good flight stick - I have Freespace 2, and I would die to go through the B5 missions, let alone maybe go through the game again. But my old Logitech Wingman is just about dead (and definitely obsolete).

This is great! I had no idea that Freespace had been open sourced or that there was such a MOD community behind it! I'm gonna have to look into this, as most of my modding efforts have been in the area of Unreal Engine.

What am I missing, the OP has everything you need to play FS1 on the FS2 engine, what does buying the original disk get you? Gets you legal, which part is illegal, I se no disclaimers on the DL pages. Do you need the original for anything other than a license?

I'm unclear on this too... from the looks of the FSPort (FS1 -> FS2) website, the port is not 100% self-contained in that it does appear that either FS1 or FS2 files are needed... but I still can't tell which, or both...

EDIT: After visiting the forum for FSPort, looks like FS2 is needed. Also looks like there are some purely optional aspects that may require certain original FS1 resources. Anyone have a cheap source for 2?

It's a tough game to find. Ebay has it, but the price is high. Check your local game retailers...I actually managed to snag FS1 at an EBgames a year ago. Check thrift stores, too...usually all they have is crap, but every so often they have a good old game. They're also a good source for cheap joysticks.

Depending on your convictions, you could consider the game "abandonware", but I'm not going to go into THAT any further.

Do I interpret this correctly that buying this game (in the OP) will allow you to play FS1, using the open source FS2 engine for it, but you will not be able to play FS? Or does what AStar617 wrote mean that you have to own BOTH FS1 and FS2 to use the open source engines???

OK, I think I answered my own question here

OP - you may want to change your OP to clarify what this ebgames disk can & can't let you do -- in reading it I got the idea that I would be able to play fs2_open if I bought this disk, but as far as I can tell, I can't
