FreeSpace 2 space sim crashing to desktop

Hi. I'm having trouble playing FreeSpace 2 (the best space sim ever in my book) on my computer in hi-resolution mode (1024x768). I have an Athlon Thunderbird 1 GHz, Iwill KK266 (KT133A chipset) motherboard, and a 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP video card and am using DirectX 8.0a. I know the problem is video-related because the game crashes to the desktop on the Setup screen when I try to detect the hi-res video setting. The game runs fine using the 640x480 setting (Glide or Direct3D). I get the same problem with and without the patch (forget what version). BTW, my current desktop video setting is 1024x768.

The game worked fine in hi-res mode on my old computer (Pentium III 500 MHz, Soyo 6BA+IV (440BX chipset) motherboard, and a 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 AGP video card, using DirectX 7).

Anyone know of any known problems with this game and my current setup? I figure it has something to do with an incompatibility with either 1) the Via chipset, 2) the Voodoo5 card, or 3) DirectX 8.0a. I've also e-mailed Volition and Interplay, but haven't heard back from them yet.

The Star Wars Phantom Menace DVD (still a weak movie) got me into this game again and I really want to play it in its full glory.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Tonet
