Awesome. My favorite space sim. Unfortunately, not too many people had broadband when it was fresh, so multiplayer could be pretty awful.

Guess there isn't much of a market for a space combat flight sim these days.

Apparently Volition released the source code for Freespace 2, so technically, I think its legal to simply DL it. I've found numerous links offering the complete Freespace 2 game.

Okay, apparently, its not legal to simply DL it. Volition released the source code under a noncommerical license. Interplay and Volition also maintain the rights to various artwork and such within the game as well. Volition still exists in some form, within the publisher THG. Interplay apparently owns the rights to the FS storylines and name. Volition has expressed interest in making a Freespace 3, but Interplay doesn't want to stick their neck out to hire them to do it. Given that FS2 didn't sell well, mainly because they didn't advertise for it at all, and Interplay's near bankruptcy, they have essentially shelved it. There are those in the community that argue that FS1/2 should be considered abandonware because Interplay isn't willing to sell it or distribute it in any way, and it'd be a crime to let such a great game fade away.

I won't post direct links to FS1/2 DL mirror here, but if you follow the trail through the links I posted and look up FS1/2 in Wikipedia, you should be able to follow the trail on your own.

Never heard of this one... but for space flight combat games, I loved Elite for the C64 when I was a kid. That game rocked!

Geez, from one of those screenshots it almost looks as good as X3 Reunion and that simply is the best looking Space Sim Ive seen.

Id be more interested in new storyline though.... Freespace 3 or Freespace from the point of the people trapped on Earth after the Lucifer went critical would be awesome even with the old engine.

Reminds me of the Freespace 1 game written with the Freespace 2 graphics in. Was a refreshing change.

There are many addon campaigns of quality content. Look for Descent, Transend, and Sol as they are the top recommended ones.

EDIT: You can also find a mod of the original Freespace for FS2.

Best space sim ever. In my top 5 favorite games ever. I wish they would make a sequel, where they reconnect with earth.

And I want to find out why the Shivan's made Capella go supernova, not to mention more abou their origins.

Unfortunately, because Interplay is virtually bankrupt, this probably won't ever happen.

yep... damn it so many threads left hanging. Definitely classics those games were. It's a shame how these days we're flooded with the same old FPS formula.

One day I will find this and buy it again.

I lost stuff over the years including the Sidewinder joystick and other things.

I jumped from one game to another.

There is a working install copy of the SCP over at http://www.hard-light.net/

I finally got around to installing and playing it. The visuals are jaw dropping, especially the shield effects. Plus, you can run in 'nonstandard' modes, which is everything buy 640x40 and 1024x768. :p Running it 1680x1050x32, 2x AA, and runs pretty much pegged at 60fps.

If you haven't already, definitely give it spin.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. God bless the mod community, the only thing keeping PC gaming world from sliding entirely into console oriented mediocrity.

At the moment, just the ones that were included in the Hard Light package, Transcend, Derelict, and FS1 Port.
