Freespace 2 newb - where do I start?

After 11 years of avoiding the inevitable, I am prepared to let myself go to Freespace 2.

What are the mandatory mods? I know there's a widescreen patch that I will be using - will it conflict with anything?

Don't mod. Go get the Freespace Source Code Project and the relevant media packs.

play the game as is. it looks decent enough. only thing you might need is a frame limiter.

Definitely grab the media packs and probably even the latest build. Far better than the original.
