i know that @home has "static-dynamic" ips as some call it.. but should it change when i'm not home, my family will be sorta lost..

but when i try to get it to automatically obtain the IP, it just hangs...

any suggestions??

The @home DHCP require that the host have the hostname they gave to it - C290572-xxx or whatever. If your machine doesn't respond with this name it's not going to work.

You don't need to worry about the IP changing, however. It's pretty much a static IP address assigned to you, but it can be fed to you via DHCP for easier config. Just treat it as a 100% static and you're set.

Well it CAN change..in fact mine has now changed 3 times this year...it does happen, just not very often. The reason it won't obtain DHCP is because it's been static for more than 7 days (probably). You have to call tech support, get a FULL account repush (including modem) and make sure your system is set up fully DHCP. Also power cycle the modem after this...that should do it if you want to go DHCP.

call tech support to get them to do something? blah.. that'll happen :)

what do you mean by full account repush? dang nab it, freesco is a nice little quick secure box... i have a k6-2 i can slap win2k on and use it.. but seems like it'd be more of a pain :(

It has nothing to do with your end at all. @Home wants everyone to be DHCP, so their systems are very very picky. If you are set static for more than a week, then you don't ever send a DHCP request. The @Home servers assume it's because you no longer need to get online. From that point on they WON'T allow you to log on DHCP any more. The only way to free up their systems and get them to respond to your requests is to 'repush the system'. It just sends your account info down to the DHCP servers and says 'heh, this guys gonna need an address soon, give it to him when he asks'.

Really it shouldn't matter...the settings usually don't change often. But if you want to go DHCP, and if you've been more than a week or so set static...you'll end up calling tech support for a full repush, no way around it.
