Freescale Taking Nanocrystal Flash to Production
Freescale will replace floating gate (FG) flash with NC flash, beginning with consumer-use microcontrollers that will hit the market next year, according to Gowrishankar Chindalore, manager of the NC flash technology development program. Eventually, Freescale will use the technology for its most important product line, the automotive MCUs, which have the highest reliability requirements.

Initial implementation is in 90nm devices, but they report the erase times are 100x faster than FG (floating gate) architecture. Could be the exact sort of technology breakthru needed to eliminate the Achilles heel of existing MLC/SLC based SSD's.
