Just thought I'd toss this out there as I know there are those of us that are eyeballing NAS devices. I just got my box up and running so I haven't had a chance to thoroughly test it but it looks promising.

Has anyone else tried this and have any thoughts?

P.S. Jack let me know if this belongs in another forum, I figured the network crew might appreciate this.

P.S.S. I know this runs on Freebsd but don't let that scare you, the web gui makes it painless.
<---knows nothing about .nix OS'es at this time. I just know I can see my shares from windows boxes! 😉

I was thinking about this before and considered giving it a try for fun, but I noticed that most NAS's out there have added features that this program did not offer. Like Media streaming and Bittorrent downloading abilities... I know that the NAS could have additional features added that you could SSH to it to run, but are there add ons like this that would let you use the features on the webgui?? mainly thinking about the media server

No clue (I've only looked into the data part, plus the syncing which I need to try and is pretty cool), I did a quick search on their forums but didn't have any luck finding support for a true media streamer or torrent support, albeit you may be able to as I really don't have much experience with the software. You should checkout their site.

It doesn't look too bad but there's still some work to do, it wouldn't even install properly to an IDE disk in VMWare.

Theres a freenas vmware machine available for download I believe, already built for you to test out

check vmware.com for vm appliance

That's beside the point, the ISO has an install option so it should be able to install. Especially since all it's installation really does is partition, make a filesystem and extract a tarball.

Syncing?? what is that, sounds interesting. I believe the FreeNas has been up for a long time.. doubt too much is being done to improve upon it now.. would be nice if they took it to a new level and added more unique features

I haven't fooled with it yet, hopefully the FAQ is outdated as some of the posts I read on the user forums sounded like they were able to get multiple shares to backup to the NAS on scheduled times etc. Link to the FreeNas FAQ about using Delta as a GUI for Rsync
