so i am thinking about play freelancer again, man what a cool game, too bad it got too repetitive. *sigh*

I thought the idea was great, but the game was too short. I never got a chance to play online though. The game had some rpg elements, and it was kind of a tease. Man I would love a space based MMORPG.

I picked it back up a couple months ago, played for a while on one of the mods, got bored again, haven't played since.

Seconded. Playing Freelancer really got me into EVE Online even if the combat is completely different.

wow totally forgot about this game. was a lot of fun. got a bit too hard towards the end though. fun game nevertheless

i hated it when i would jump to a planet only to wind up in the middle of a fight and have everyone start gunning for me. i can't remember how many times i got fragged trying to taxi into the planet's queue.

yep. got frustrated and ended up using the cheats towards the end

I loved it, but agree it was a little too limited. Great concept that didnt stretch far enough. Could have been so much more. Also one of those free-form games that becomes totally pointless once you beat the campaign. The side missions have absolutely NO variety to them at all, (unlike Morrowind or Oblivion).
The only thing left to do is aquire a Sabre or Titan and then theres nothing.
Well maybe collect the class 10 weapons. But again, nothing special and wont keep you going.

yep. i stopped playing it after i beat the campaign. I guess I could've explored and traded weapons or something...oh well. I might play it again..just for kicks

i tried EVE online and enjoyed it, but i feel like there is wayyy too much going on in that game.

Some friends at school and I played some multiplayer this year. Good fun. Then I went back to playing the campaign and quickly got bored with all the side quests I had to do. You can only do so many assasination, grab loot, destroy base quests before they are repetitive.

Privateer 2 was IMHO better than Freelancer. Although I did like FL very much. FMV cut scenes starring Clive Owen FTMFW!

EVE is the hands down best MMO out there if you like extremely detailed worlds and economies. So detailed that there's a bit of a learning curve.

Fixed. I've been playing Eve for about 9 months now and every time I think I've figured out most of it, I find some other part of the game I hadn't even thought about. Eve rocks. 😀

[edit] IMO EVE is exactly what Freelancer should have been... and more.

what the hell is freelancer? sounds made-up...
Hardly.
Its a Microsoft game, came out a while back and is (sadly) probably the last good space shooter ever made.
Unless you like X2 and X3, which I didnt.

Freelancer is a term used for any pilot who flies for themselves and not a company, government agency or mercenary group. Interestingly enough, it would seem that YOU are the only freelancer in the entire game, unless you do multiplayer.

Anyway, where was I?
Oh, yes. You start off as a pilot who survives a big attack and gets stuck on a planet with some of the other survivors, not the least of which is your client who promised you a million bucks and now he cant pay.
You end up getting hired by the local stellar police and, (eventually) have to save the universe from destruction by an ancient alien race.
The story is kind simple and the acting is definitely cheesy, but the gameplay is excellent.

A lot of folks dont like it because you cant use a joystick, only a mouse and keyboard.
I actually kind of liked how well they implemented the mouse control and find it to be easier for dogfighting.
Theres a ton of ships you can by along with a wide assortment of weapons. You can even purchase cargo frieghters and haul trade goods in between systems for a profit.
That was the other part that some folks hated and some folks loved.

Your experience level is determined by your net worth. As you aquire assets and money you gain XP. When you level up enough you get another Main Quest mission. During the in-between time, you can pick up bounties for cash. They are all extremely simple and repetative, the only varitey in them comes from using new ships and weapons.

Because of its popularity, some folks have made mods for it. There is even a freelancer mod manager which is almost required to use for some of the mods out there. One guy went so far as to make about a hundred more ships and added them to the game, along with new equipment for them. You can fly just about anything from the Star Wars universe (even capital ships), Homeworld, Star Trek, Babylon 5 and a few others.

Overall, Lickens Enterprises gives it a 9 for graphics, 8 for sound and music, 6 for story, and 9 for playability.
Check it out now!
